I was asking many people this and figured it would be a good idea to just post a thread.
What were your biggest obstacles and how did you overcome them when you started your weight loss journey or even now if you are just maintaining?

Portion control. I look for food choices that gave me more quantity for fewer calories.0

my biggest obstacle was my fat *kitten* lol and this site helped me overcome my laze and hold me accountable for what i eat and how much i exercise .0

Avoiding the quick and easy meals. As a busy single mom and university student I was always looking for what was easiest and fastest, so a lot of processed foods, and fast food resteraunts0

Well i hated exercise... so i went to search thru the web to find something which will make me do some form of exercise and one day while coming across Wii... i saw this EA Sports Active software... it has running programs. There is short runs / long runs... u can customise however u wish to do.
First it was tough for me to run.. alwiz run out of breath... i did 50 minutes.. easy one then slowly i customize to fit my level. It gets easier and easier i feel... So far i've done more than 3 weeks... and seriously lost my tummy fat... and not only that i lost 3kg already which made me wanna run summore.
Yes its madness to do all this crazy exercises but i guess thts the only way to look better.0 -
Depression...I overcame it by working out...jogging has been a great therapy.0

The little voice inside my head saying, "You can't do that."
I'm getting better at telling that little voice to STFU. It's still in there, but it's weakening as it gets proven wrong time and time again.0 -
My current obstacle, it's an ongoing one, just making healthier choices, eating out and judging which is healthier, what can I afford calories wise. More, going out with someone and they feel I'm caring too much about calories.
I found that knowing what calories are in what actually helps me say no. It isn't worth it. Last week the scale didn't budge, so make better choices! Lol.0 -
My biggest obstacles were trying to change my food habits after years of bad eating. I grew up where everything was deep fried and lathered in butter. We didn't just eat one cookie. We ate 10. I slowly had to start cutting back on the butter and started baking things instead of frying. Its taken awhile and I still have bad days but they are few are far between.0

My biggest obstacle was not making healthy living a priority. It has to be for me, at least now. And I have to plan ahead with what I'm going to eat...even if I'm out and about, I know a couple places I can stop and get relatively low calorie meals.0

My biggest problem has been consistency. I will have 2,3,4 good days and then fall off the wagon. I am only 20lbs over weight so it isn't life threatening, more a vanity thing than anything else. Its making the commitment and sticking with it that's my problem. Oh and planning.. I can make good choices when I plan but its planning that I find really hard, that's why I went grocery shopping today!0

Water. At first I had to force it down. Even now (three months later) I still struggle sometimes.
I'm giving up soft drink completely the week before Xmas. I'm at my parents and won't have my car so it will be easier to stop completely.0 -
I messed up my back pretty good in my mid 20's which was 1 of many contributing factors to my weight gain. When I began with my weight loss in Dec. 2009 walking for extended periods was painful. Back then walking for 3 mins non-stop was too much for me. Stairs were torture. I did alot of research in it and actually discovered they make shoes designed to be comfortable for walk and running. Once I got the right kind of shoes for me, walking became easier, less painful.0

Mine was my physical limitations and building up to the point where I could do enough exercise to start burning off fat, and finding different exercises I can do to change things up a bit when weight stalls.0

Biggest obstacle? MOI, ME, MYSELF, I and all of the above.
Honestly, it was me thinking I could never do it so why try? Now from reading and looking at the pics in the success stories, I realize that one day that might be me.. and I'm willing to give it my all to achieve that.
Second obstacle, = exercise... hate it, but just have to make my lazy butt do it!0 -
I tried every diet and exercise program under the sun and I came to realize the biggest thing I needed to change was my mode of thinking. I needed some sort of therapy and I have no insurance and I could not afford it. That's when I discovered OA. I love this program. There are people like me there that have a food addiction and together we are overcoming it.0

Having a lot of friends and drinking buddies and all of a sudden losing them (for various reasons).... helped me to realize how comfortable I had gotten with being a fatty/smoker/alcoholic. Always happens whether its friends or a dating relationship - leads me to become satisfied with my body and then I start eating cuz I get bored with the relationships too lol.0

Nothing really...my brain just...clicked one day, started actually making notes of the calories, found out my BMR, found MFP...rest is history really. I've always liked sports, i still eat what i used to only in moderation, hence why it's been pretty easy so far for me.0

I have a large appetite, I'm hungry all the time. I overcome it by eating larger meals, eating lost of veggies, drinking lost of water and being mentally strong.0

I am the same. My big problem is i get really involved and motivate and do fantastic, but i dont hold it for long. Ive been back on the wagon for a month and i just had 3 bad days so ive got to stop it there and get back on track. Exercise was hard for me i couldnt motivate myself to do it, now its just wat i do wen i get home from work/when i get up on the weekends.
Food wise my big problem is craving days. Most days im good and if i want sweets i can have a tiny bit and be satisfied, but then i have days where i just want chocolate and chips and everything. i try to give in in very small portions but find on those days small portions isnt enough. And once ive blown the day, i decide might as well have my other cravings and only have one over cal day.
I'm still at early stages so im prob not who you wanted to answer but thats my weaknesses0 -
My biggest obstacle was figuring out why I gained so much to begin with. I had a few ideas, but it took a couple months to really figure it out.0
