Doing everything right, but little loss

Hey everyone. I am new to MFP but I dove in head first. I'm at 1300 cals a day and burn between 400-700 at the gym almost everyday. I started this exactly a month ago and have lost 8 lbs but the past week it has only fluctuating between gaining and losing a few ounces. I started at 205 and I'm at 197 today. Any tips or tricks to really kick start this!?

Take it slow. You must be doing something right because you had weight loss. Are you staying within your goals?
  • 8 pounds is great...if you figure you're losing 2 pounds a week, it may be a little difficult to lose any more than that in a week especially if you're already eating almost the bare minimum of calories..it will come..you're doing great

Did you re-evaluate your caloric budget after the first batch of loss? Are you drinking enough water? Are you weighing in at the same time/place/scale every time? Have you changed your exercise regimen and/or are you uncertain at all about the actual caloric value of your food?
  • Don't think that just because you started losing big you can keep losing by doing the same thing. Every month it's recommended you change up your routine. It may be that your body is at the point where it needs MORE food, so 1300 a day isn't enough. Especially working out at the gym like that.

I think it sounds like you are right where you want to be! Keep it up. Sometimes the changes aren't so dramatic at first. Give it 12 weeks, is what I have been hearing lately. That's THREE MONTHS, oy. But if you are diligent, you will see changes by then and so will everyone in your life!

Are you using a digital food scale to accurately measure your food? Do you wear a quality heart rate monitor to accurately measure calories burned during exercise? Are you eating back most of your exercise calories?

For great info, click on the link in my signature "guide to calorie deficits" and see the "expectations" link in "links you want to read again and again."
  • Thanks so much, guys! I have been sticking to goals 90% of the time and going to kick it up to 100%! I usually don't eat back burned cals but could due to drink more water and get a good heart rate monitor. Great tips! I'm really excited to apply what I've learned.

One question- until I get a good heart rate monitor I was curious about the calorie estimates on the gym machines. I use a precor treadmill most of the time with the incline at 10-12 and I walk at 3.7 speed for 30-60 minutes. It says that I burn between 400-700 cals at those rates. Should I trust it?
