Chicken is good and healthy. Cous Cous is a good replacement for pasta and rice and alot less cals. I hardly eat pasta now! cous cous is like fine rice and swells up alot with water so bulks out alot. Tomato sauces are low calories too. 100g of my local supermarkets is 30cals. Mix the two and its a yummy tomato cous cous. Add some vegetarian meat (Qourn is great and low cal and tastes like meat) and its a lovely tasty meal0

I just cook vegetables and meat for all and then add a little something to the meal for the non-dieters - baked potatoes, rolls, mac and cheese, or whatever.0

Are you dieting or developing a new way of looking at foods? I find I am generally cooking the same things, but I fill my plate with sweet potato, cauliflower, broccoli, chard, salad etc. then I put 3 or 4 oz of meat on there. Plate appears more full, with less calories than ever. I also try and eat vegetarian a few days a week.
However, if I am cooking your eating what I am cooking because I don't cook 2 separate meals. You can make mac and cheese healthier if you have little ones that want the gooeyness of it all.0 -
thanks for the responses
its tricky as my husband has to GAIN weight, i have a baby who is just starting food, and then theres me trying to lose weight ha ha. but im not dieting, i am changing my lifestyle so its all together healthier for the LONG TERM. Will try filling the plate with more veggies, and buying more chicken. i wish i liked cous cous but i really cant stand the stuff!! 0 -
Don't like to be critical but make one meal for everyone, lean protein with lots of veg or salad. If your husband is gaining he needs more protein, you need a small portion and the kids can add a bit of starch. You are not doing your kids any favors thinking of healthy nutritious food is a special "diet" . Veg is cheap babies can eat most basic food mushed up with a stick blender.
One thing that I think is ridiculous is parents pandering to kids fussy eating habits, make one meal and endeavor to sit around the table together as much as your schedule allows. This is a good habit for life, show your family how easy it is to cook fresh non processed food.
Never, ever reward children with food.....we are humans not dogs.0 -
I just counted calories. I'd eat smaller portions, skip sides, or add extra cheese or something to the kids. I have a lot of kid-friendly meals I make on a regular basis that are low-ish on the calories. My diary is open if you want, but I'm not on a calorie deficit anymore.0

I agree on the just cook one meal sentiment. We have 4 different needs in my house. I need to lose a lot, my wife needs to lose a bit, my Kindergartener is where she needs to be, and my 12yr old needs to gain 10lbs. We just have good conversation about what we are doing and be logical in our choices. The kids still get ice cream sometime and I skip it
Good lean protein, great carb sources and low fat will set great examples for the kiddos!
Also, don't diet....change your opinion on food. As clique as it is, you need to make the life-style choice to make it successful. Keep your family engaged in the conversation as well, they want to help you!!!!0
