Hey all,

I have been thinking about toning and as im only around 9lbs from my goal weight i really need to start doing it. i have 1.5kilo weights but i want peoples opinions.

What toning exercises did you find the most affective? I do squats, tricep dips, crunches and push ups (as best i can) but want to know if anyone else knows any really good ones?

xx

    yep this

I started seeing dramatic changes in tone, tightness all over, fat loss - when I started pushing myself and lifting heavy (along with eating enough cals, and enough protein)

    Lift Heavy.

If you've not done any heavy training before I would actually recommend a full body routine done 3/week as a starting point. Cardio mixed in to taste.

What he said above. Lift heavy, 3 times a week, full body workout based around compound movements (please forget bicep curls). Remeber "toning" is reducing bodyfat, but retaining the muscle...Calorie deficit, heavy lifting = win.

I lift heavy: my deadlift is 245-250lbs, my back squat is 185, front squat is 150, Overhead squat is 100, shoulder press is 97, BP is 115... but my numbers don't matter, the idea is to push yourself. If your zipping through reps easily, add more weight, keep adding more weight until you are really struggling to get through your reps - and DON'T UNDERESTIMATE what you can lift. You are stronger than you know!!

No spot reducing but I'll tell you what... SQUATS by far have done wonders for my legs and butt. If you want to really work your butt, hamstring raises are the best.

For most people, heavy can be considered a weight that you can only lift about 6 to 8 times before completely failing despite giving it your all. However, do a warm-up set first to get loosened up and prevent injury. Make sure to focus on compound exercises (like bench press, pull up, squats, lunges). Crunches are completely ineffective for toning (this has actually been proven in clinical trials). Try leg raises instead, or planks.

You can't target weight loss, eat at a deficit and you'll see fat loss in those areas eventually. Your body determines where to pull fat stores from though, so there's no telling where you'll see the weight loss first (it often isn't where you want it to be from, unfortunately).

We say lift heavy because everyone has different strength levels. Do you have access to a gym? I would suggest going and if you can afford it springing for a personal trainer to show you the ropes for lifting. You want compound exercises that work large portions of your body at once. Things like Squats, Deadlifts, Bent Over Rows, Military Press, and Bench Press. You also want to lift at a weight where you can do approximately 4-6 repititions, but not more than that. My personal favorite routine is StrongLifts 5x5, so 5 sets of 5 repititions.

Unfortunately if you're trying to buy weights for the workout, it may be infeasible for you to get what you need for lifting. You would need a bar, and up to 150 lbs of weights for said bar (more or less depending on your abilities). That can add up, and not everyone has space for that kind of equipment in their home, I know I don't.

Barring a gym and proper weights you can do body weight exercises with added resistance from light weights (pushups, squats, pullups, etc) or you can start a workout DVD program like P90X or some such. Folks have had success with those.

Weight lifting, in my opinion, is your best bet though.
