Spend some time researching the dishes for calorie content. Greek and middle eastern food can be really good because it tends to have a lot of the good stuff and not so much bad but be careful of the amount of rice you're eating and how it gets prepared (you don't want it soaked in oil).

I love it myself and hummus has become one of my go to items.

So I am greek and Italian, and I feel that a typical "village" salad in a greek restaurant is always a good choice. Its not the typical greek salad...not olives or feta, in that sense, it's pretty healthy. Sometimes spanikopita (spinach pie) is tasty, however, if they use puff pastry or lots of cheese, stay away from that. But its loades with spinach and dill and other heart health ingredients. Middle eastern food is nice too, and is typically really low in fat. Try Falafel, which is made from ground chick peas and veggies, you can also try hummus (which the calories add up quick so be ware) which has tons of protein. Also, tabhouli (not sure that i spelled that correctly) is a great side dish, which has lots of veggies, parsley, and I believe it is buglar wheat (kind of like wheat cous cous). Hope that helps

Supposedly Greek/Mediterranean food is the healthiest... genre (?) of food to eat. Everything is healthy in proportions!

The Mediterranean diet is supposed to be one of the healthiest in the world (Greek's have a longer life-span than most!)

More about portion control than what you'd be eating, avoid too many sauces and bready items and nearly everything else is lean protein and healthy fats :)

    Enjoy!

Hummus is a great source of protein! You also can't go wrong with Tabbouli or Fattoush (Lebanese Salad). Most foods are light, but you should go easy on the pita bread or try substituting it for a whole wheat alternative.

Meat and veggies are always safe....I love shish kebob! I also will order saginaki but only use 1/2 a pita with the cheese....maybe a little tzsedki (not spelled right)!!

I always get the Shawarma patter with no potatoes or rice. with hummus and garlic for my chicken. And no pita. It's my favourite thing to eat. You get a ll the flavour without the bad stuff.
