Short history of my work out routine: For the past several months I have been working very hard physically doing about 4 to 5 days worth of cardio for an hour and then strength training for about 30 minutes three days a week. I now have about 30 lbs left to lose to reach my goal and have asked a personal trainer friend of mine to help me tone up my arms, mid section (core), and thighs. He has agreed and we started yesterday. He has me doing cardio every other day skipping wed and sun altogether as my rest days. So like this week I will just get 2 days of cardio in while the following week I will get 3 days.....and so on. Here are my concerns: I know change is good to keep your body from getting used to the work out and keep you from plateuing, but my fear is that without all that cardio I am going to gain weight!! I want to give this a chance b/c I am such a skeptic when it comes to change and he clearly is the expert not me.........someone please help put my fears to rest? Give me your thoughts!

Oh and just so you know, I've already asked him if I can just do cardio every day on my own and he said no, he wants it every other day skipping two days a week for rest days......................

I think it's all about the intensity. If you work out intensely on the days that you work out, then you will burn more calories. Also, you will have more energy to work out harder, since you'll have rest days built in. And I'm assuming on the other days (the days you're not resting or doing cardio) that you'll be doing weights? That burns a ton of calories too. Try it for a week or two, and if it's not working for you, then you can go back to cardio every day, but I think it's worth a try!

I say go with it. While cardio has its benefits, over-doing it won't really help. If he has a detailed idea of what he wants to do for you, it's worth giving it a chance.
If it doesn't appear to be working after several weeks, re-evaluate (with him) and see what else can be done.

You asked your expert friend to give you a routine, and he did. Try it out. You are not the first person he has trained.

No matter what your trainer has you do, if your diet is "ON" you will lose weight......But I say listen to him and see how it goes.....give it a few weeks! I used a male trainer for a while and did not lose weight, so I ventured off on my own and did my own thing and figured out what works for me and I have lost my weight. It is a process that you have to go through and figure out what works for you!
    Good luck!
  • I say, try it and see how it goes. Letting go and trusting someone when you've been doing something the same way for a while is hard. You'll know soon if it isn't working and he'll know too and he'll probably suggest any changes too.

I guess if you're really questioning him, you could always ask for some testimonials from some of his previous clients....

Good luck, you've done great!!! And I'm sure you'll continue to do so because you are really trying to be discerning about the directionof your health.

GREAT point that in all my panic I had totally forgotten.........but absolutely correct! Ok so I am going to give this a try for 30 days but I AM going to have to adjust my eating because I am used to burning a lot of calories and am therefore able to eat a little more. Strength doesn't burn near as much calories so as long as I adjust my food intake acordingly it will be ok.

    Thanks for the reminder!!!
