Acknowledgement is a big thing.. I now go and stand in front of the fridge and say "What the hell, you're not hungry, just bored" then have a big drink of water.

Eat chewing gum? I eat when I'm tired ... and similarly find it very difficult not to!

Oh and pre-planning my food in the diary REALLY HELPS!

Don't associate food with entertainment. Don't watch TV while eating dinner, don't browse the internet while having lunch, etc.
Takes a while, but it helps.

I find it very easy to want to eat if I'm bored. It takes effort for me not too. One thing that I've found that works for me is intermittent fasting. There's plenty of info here and on the internet about it but it keeps me satisfied and I have less of an urge to snack between planned meals.

I would usually consume excess calories at night so with IF I am eating my last meal late at night. Keeps my brain happy.

That was my number one vice since I started pulling my act together.
I would find myself going to the fridge and looking around, checking the cupboards... all while I'm not even hungry!
And consciously, even acknowledging that I was not hungry, I'd find something to put into my mouth. There was no nutritional need or rational reason for doing so, purely habit.

How I stopped this? I asked myself when I was most prone to these acts... and as pinkgigi pointed out, it was when I had nothing to do and was idle for too long. It's actually exactly the reason why some smokers have a hard time quitting - they're used to the movement of their hands to their mouths. It's an addictions in itself.

Take up a hobby. I got around this by creating new muscle memory behaviours. I now associate that 'hand movement' muscle memory with playing the guitar, playing with my dog, going to the gym and lifting weights. The most important thing is to find something that engages you mentally, long enough for these 'feelings' to pass.

My suggestion? VIDEO GAMES! After a long day of work and exercise, after a nice home cooked meal that you've prepared, keep your hands busy with a game.

    Good luck!

This was also a HUGE problem for me since I always snacked when I had nothing to do. I started getting really active during the day, even if I had nothing to do that day I'd go window shop or something and I ALWAYS have chewing gum available for when there is just nothing to do :)

i did the same thing, i ate when i was bored even if i was so full it hurt!! I recently used a self hypnosis and subliminal program for 30 days for weight loss and i can honestly say i dont think about food when im bored any more, doesnt even cross my mind... not to say it will work on everyone but it worked for me
