Hi there,

I'm treating myself to a Chinese takeaway with mate tonight and was wondering what the best one to have? My target for the meal is properly about 800. I'm not a big fan of nuts though or really spicy food.

Any help would be great.

Thanks

The plain steamed rice (you can even ask for brown rice) is good. Mix it up with Beef and Broccoli or some veggies. Very good. (Oh, and I have a wonton soup just because I love it, but the sodium count is usually high)

The only thing you really should avoid is the sweet saucy meals or anything fried - even though those foods are beyond delicious!

Order what you want, but get the sauce on the side. That way, you can add what you want to it and probably won't use nearly as much as then would normally put on it. I'm a fan of chicken and broccoli or veggies. Order extra veggies and eat those first. =-)
If you are going to do rice, ask if they offer brown rice as an option. Good luck! =-)

I always try to choose a vegetarian option to avoid all the calories from the meat.
  • Chinese takeaways are generally very oily in nature. The process of stir frying and deep frying increases the calorie content exponentially. 800 calories seem like a good number to spare, but it could be gone in a second with all the oil content.

But that said, you can opt for soups or steamed food. Steamed chicken, fish, egg or tofu are healthier alternatives. :)

I'm in a similar situation, as I got invited to a Thai restaurant tonight. I've just had lunch and I have 809 calories left on my budget for today. I dont mind going slight over budget since I've been several calories under my goal both yesterday and the day before.

Like lilvixen84, I'm not much for spicy food

Be lucky to do it for 800 calories but i generally go for the mixed egg foo young with a mixed (Chicken, beef, pork and prawn) ginger and spring onion and avoid the rice and prawn crackers.

I always go for steamed vegetables and rice for a low calorie option. My favorite is Buddha's Delight.

This. The beef and broccoli recommended above is swimming in oil. The meat and broccoli are healthy, but you should be aware of what it's cooked in. I do Chinese once in a blue moon when I know I'm going to go over for the day. I used to eat it all the time when I was bigger.

    Steamed dimsum and dumplings
  • I was having a chinese every week. I had stonking cravings for it.. then I realised that of the rice, sweet and sour balls, ribs and crispy chilli beef and dumplings it was the dumplings I was craving.

I now buy a bag of them frozen for half the price of the takeaway stuff and prepare them myself at home. They are surprisingly low in everything!!

I honeslty don't think Chinese can be had in a healthy manner, no matter what you order. Rice is very high in starch and carbs, & everything else is bathed in oil, MSG and other salts and chemicals to make it taste so yummy. If I can't have anything else and I HAVE to order, I consider it an epic fail and spend the next 2-3 days gorging on water to flush my system of the sodium and stay clear of the scale for a solid week. It's just not a good fast food choice. There's not much there that's healthy is all I'm saying.

If you're "treating" yourself to Chinese, then eat what you enjoy and call it a day. Don't opt for "diet" options as you won't be satisfied when you leave and you'll want it again, soon. My experience, my opinion. Enjoy your dinner with your mate! :drinker:
  • Chicken with Broccoli and Steamed White Rice
  • Just go and have what you want. Fill your boots, then start again tomorrow. Don't let a bad day ruin a good week. A blow out now and again won't do you any harm whatever the carrot nibblers say :drinker:

I love love love chilli tofu with rice, but when I am watching the calories I get veggie chow mien, half a tub shared with a mate isn’t that many calories.

    enjoy

A little of what you fancy now and again will keep you on track in the long run - dieting is like a marathon not a sprint - go out and enjoy yourself - dont make it hard work - then back to it tomorrow (maybe up your exercise for today - a long walk etc will allow a few more calories)
  • is a beef chow mein really 550 calories??

Absolutely agree, it's a treat so enjoy it and cut back a bit over the next few days :-)

O_o Are you serious? Have you seen this cook it before? That stuff get drowned in oil and salt. Holy hell.
  • When I have Chinese food it is a cheat day. When I am craving it I go with the sushi option.

Stay away from things that are deep fried - like sweet and sour chicken or sesame chicken. Noodles are also not a good option unless you're measuring how much you eat.

I usually go with chicken/shrimp/beef with broccoli or moo shu pork with 1/2 cup of steamed rice. 800 calories is more than enough! Just try not to add much soy sauce (if any). Otherwise you'll wake up super bloated the next couple of days!
  • Most of the Chinese restaurants in my area have a "healthy" section on their menu that includes steamed chicken or tofu with vegetables, brown rice, and sauce on the side. If they don't offer that, order a dish with tons of veggies and ask for the sauce on the side.

the BEST chinese takeaway is peking dumplings, general gaos chicken and some crab rangoons-
the HEALTHIEST chinese takeaway is probably some nasty steamed stuff that you could make at home
  • not sure if these is an option.....

    NONE.

not one thing of take out chinese is "healthy".

I mean if you are going to go to a chinese sit down place than perhaps you can ask for special cooking, but, if you are going to your typical chinese take out, there is not one thing (besides the veggies) that is healthy.

If the calorie count is low, then check the sodium. Usually those places FRY the heck out of the food, and use MSG as a flavor additive.

Best choice: flame broiler or waba grill. They serve teri bowls, rice and veggies. Made to order, never fried, no MSG or salt. Get the sauce on the side. Or else you will screw your diet over for a few days because of the salt intake.

By no means am I a professional. When I was losing there was no room for compromise.
