I don't have a problem with it as long as the cans are BPA free, although they're now saying that aluminum causes Alzheimer. It often seems like nothing's safe these days =/
Soup is fantastic, just make sure you're being healthy! Canned soups are often loaded with sodium.

Personally I stay away from canned soups. I don't like the amount of sodium in them. Instead I make my own. I'll grab all the ingredients and make a big batch on the weekend and ziploc them into individual sizes. Great for my lunches!

    But that's just me....

It's really convenient, I eat a lot of it--but I often go waaay over my sodium allowance.
For the calories, I think it's a good choice. Just make sure you get your water in!
  • I eat soup every day rightly or wrongly, but for me it works. I have my main meal at lunch time, and have soup in the evening.

I think they are ok . . .I had a packet soup for lunch today because I was so cold! I do make my own soup sometimes . .its really easy . . .but theres not always time so packet/tinned is fine :)
  • I really do love soup, especially the Campbells Chunky versions. The Chicken noodle, and beef one. Yum! However, the sodium is insane. There are low sodium ones, and I only have them if I'm sick (recently had strep throat and everything was hurting going down) so I had a few bowls of soup those days. Other than that though, I try to stay away or make my own. :)

I eat tonnes of soup, literally atleast 4 days a week if not more. I was recently reminded about how the lining of canned goods contain BPA and of the health risks when consuming canned food. I have been making an effort to buy the Campbells soup that comes in the cardboard containers and to make my own in the crock pot., hoping it makes a bit of a difference.

I started making my own soup when I went vegetarian a year ago - most canned soup are made with chicken broth- but I see it like this. If you have the time to make it, it' cheaper, fresher, and you can make it just the way you like. If you need something fast that takes no thought, canned soup is better than McDonalds, and easy to log. It's all a matter of your needs!

It's been years since I've had canned soup. It's just so easy to make, and so much more delicious when it's homemade. Plus it's a great way to use up wilted vegetables and leftover rice and such.

However, if you really don't cook at all I think canned vegetable-based soup is a decent option as far as processed foods go. Just be aware of how much sodium you're consuming.

Agree with other posts that canned soups, while often very good, are too high in sodium.
  • I do a combination of home made and canned soups just depending on time and what ever else life throws at me.

The sodium content does tend to worry me but I'm more focused on fiber and protein right now so as long as the soup helps me reach one of those goals I'm more lenient with the other two.

Nothing beats a fresh homemade soup hot out of the crock pot whem I get home though! :D

Also interested in a recipe... my grandma used to make green bean soup (an old german recipe), but I don't think there's anyone else in the world who makes it that way besides the people in my family. BUT maybe you could prove me wrong. :)

Gee! That's the first time I've ever been asked for a recipe! I will admit, I tend to just chuck things in & hope for the best.....so I didn't measure the ingredients accurately:

Fry an onion in a lttle oil in bottom of saucepan; add lentils, chilli flakes & as many green (French) beans as you can, together with about a pint of veg stock (I use Bouillon); simmer for about 40 mins, adding a more water if it gets too thick. Allow to cool; then blend. Reheat & servce as required.

I'm sure it won't measure up to your grandma's recipe, but it hasn't killed me yet
