So I was roaming around on myfitnesspal today and I noticed my sodium was -5108! even though I hadn't gone over on anything else other than "Surgars".
Any help with this? and how to get "Surgars" down too
thanks :)

    Start reading labels...

Sodium: Ditch processed foods like lunch meat, seafood -- even those little tiny laughing cow cheese wedges. Cheese has a lot of sodium....

Easiest way to lower sugar is lower carbs --- unles syou're actually eating sugar, like candy and soda -- then its a no-brainer.
I would not worry about sugar too much if its from natural fruit

Are you eating a lot of processed foods? Even healthy frozen foods like Weight Watchers, Lean Cuisine or Amy's Organic are filled with Sodium. I was living off Smart Ones, a few years ago when I tried Weight Watchers and my BP skyrocketed.

Coming from a former diabetic, with regards to sugar, watch what you drink. Obviously soda, or flavored coffees. Also, diet soda, cold green tea (my weakness) juices etc.. Even flavored water, is loaded with sugar.

Your food journal isn't public. I can't make a suggestion on lowering you sodium specifically other than saying that food prepared in fast food restaurants has a lot of sodium because they cook it ahead of time and need the salt to keep if from spoiling. Try and eat more foods in their simple form: chicken breast rather than sliced deli meat, baked potato rather than fried potatoes, soups and sauces that are made with ingredients that you can actually visualize (beef broth, flour, salt, pepper, spices. Processed foods have lots of chemicals.)

Sugar is in a lot of processed food, too. Every regular tomato catsup at the market has high fructose corn syrup in it.

even on my "bad days" i dont get higher than ~3000mg...
i would cut out the processed/frozen type stuff, cook more of your own meals. if you have little time during the week - make a big batch of something on the weekend...baked potatoes, chicken breasts etc that you can use for many different meals throughout the week.
  • Avoid fast foods & anything that comes in a box such as processed or pre-packaged ready meals. Sodium & sugar are commonly used as food preservatives so the food will last long. If you have the time, pre-cooked your meals & freeze them so you'll have a quick healthy low-sodium meal handy.

Another thing, avoid refined carbs as much as possible & eat more non-starchy carbs such as veggies. These refined foods are converted into sugar more easily. Fruits are good but it should be eaten in moderation. Stay away from liquid calories such as soda & other sugary drinks such as energy drinks, fruit drinks, even fruit juices. Lastly if you go over on sodium, drink more water to flush out the extra sodium from your body. I also read somewhere that potassium can counteract sodium.

Back to the source whole foods, "If it's made by a plant, good ... if it's made in a plant, bad".
