Lost reward - hit or miss ?

I am new to this goal setting stuff - I used to just take 'whatever'.

I have not set a publicly notified reward for hitting my first goal, but I was planning for months to go to my 30 year reunion which was last Saturday.

It would have been rewarding to go to it - just to see "Where is the fat Gary from school?"

Well, as there was a cost involved (and a little apprehension) I bailed and gave the money to my daughter for a sci-fi convention with her friends.

It blessed me that she went as she got to see my favourite Doctor (not Dr Who, but Doc Emmett L Brown from BTTF).

My reward was going to the reunion and getting the 'buzz' attached to it.

I dont fully understand the 'reward system' as I was only ever rewarded with food or money (which bought food or some need) in the past.

Being a parent with 5 kids and the 1 income at the moment, 'rewards' seem to have a cost attached.

Do I bother with rewards for myself ?

Do they work ?

Have I deep down broken something that may hinder my ongoing fitness goal (lighter, AND leaner and fitter) ?

Anyone sacrificed or lost a reward that caused a flow-on effect ?

Cheers,

Gary

    Hey Gary,

First of all well done on your amazing loss!!!!

yes, I do think we need rewards. Do we believe that we deserve rewards? Perhaps that's another question!

You did a great thing putting your daughters happiness before yours, but maybe it's time you do something just for your self :)

    Keep well!

I'm not sure that this fully answers your question, but my view is: there's no harm in treating yourself to a monetary reward - it makes you feel great to work hard for something and then get yourself something you desire for achieving one of your goals. I am aiming my rewards at fitness based things to help me on my get fit journey - sports bras, new shoes etc.

If you can't afford to part with any of your hard earned, a DIY "you session" can make you feel a million bucks. Be inventive and treat yourself to some time to do something nice for yourself. It will make you feel refreshed and ready to take on the rest of your challenge :)

I don't do (or really understand) rewards either.

For me, the reward for being fitter and healthier is fitness and health - what more should there be?

Anything else, as your note, has a financial cost, but as I control my finances, it's not going to be like suddenly having more money.

I had one of those inexpensive 'you' sessions a month ago and it was the 'BEST' - spent a day sight-seeing the town I grew up in. Burned a lot of cals that day. It could be a cool reward for my next goal to have a 'me' day again (visit elsewhere or go to the movies).

My life now is SOOO rewarding from doing this.

A reason to buy clothes ? ... that is one my wife likes lol.

A reward for ourself or partner could be tailored around their strongest 'love language(s)'.
