I'm addicted to Sushi

I absolutely love eating sushi and usually find myself at our local sushi joint at least once a week. Unfortunately, the calorie counts in the rolls I like is through the roof! Any suggestions on what kinds of sushi are healthy? I'm trying to have a meal for about 500 calories or less.

sashimi....or order the roll with brown rice, or you could even chose the ones that have no rice, that would really cut the calorie count!

Try the brick type (nigiri) instead of the rolls (maki). Anything that's just fish and rice is going to be healthier than the ones that add tempura or mayonnaise (or hot sauce because that's actually mixed with mayonnaise!)

Also, miso soup has very few calories and should be on the menu at all sushi restaurants. Have it with your meal to fill you up so you feel like eating less of the sushi itself.

Also, check out the appetizer menu. The seaweed salad (wakame) is yummy in my opinion! I also like the grilled squid that some restaurants offer (but I don't dip in the mayonnaise that sometimes comes with it!)
  • Stay away from anything that's tempura or is "spicy;" the spicy rolls usually have tons of mayo. Be careful with the Cali rolls too; sometimes they are made with mayo. Your best bet is to go with straight fish and a little avocado. I usually get the salmon avocado roll, or the yellowtail roll, or the salmon cucumber roll. Also, to cut down on calories you can ask them to go light on the rice. HTH!

california roll isn't too bad, and obviously avoid anything with fried stuff inside.... get brown rice instead of white on the seaweed.

I'm addicted as well, but since I know rice is soo high in calories (and tempura) I've changed what I eat there.. now its

    Miso Soup
    Edamamae Beans
    Salmon Sashimi

Im soo full after it too, so I don't feel so horrible, If i go with a friend, I steal one rice roll piece from them, that way I don't over do it.. And ive I really want to indulge, I have a small roll that has the rice on the inside, since it tends to have less!
  • I'm addicted too.. just reading this post has made me crave sushi so bad.

Luckily I only like two types of sushi and they are both fairly low cal but It is very easy to eat too much of it!

I was thinking the exact same thing!

I used to work at a sushi bar and I can tell you that as long as you fit the calories in, you can pretty much eat whatever roll you want. I used to eat this one called the A-1 Roll (salmon, avocado, and cream cheese, lightly breaded, fried in soybean oil, topped with scallions, spicy mayo & eel sauce) all the time. I still managed to drop weight but I had to make sure that I was accountable for the calories. So usually, I would reserve it for days that I worked because all the running around as a server earned me more than enough calories to enjoy it.

    Salmon Sashimi

3 of my faves!! I  eating at Yo Sushi!!:drinker: I don't know where you eat your sushi, but the Japanese salads are pretty low cal as is Miso Soup. You could always accompany your sushi with Green Tea or water....

Thanks for all the pointers!! That link will be really helpful. I think knowing what I am going to order before I get there will help keep me on track.

Sashimi is the key to sticking with lower calorie options. If you want some rice, you can get it on the side and just eat it sparingly.
