Anyone use a Dehydrator?

I ordered a dehyrdator and am not sure besides jerky, what I will or can use it for! I was recently at an arts/craft vendor show where someone had either dehyrated or freeze dried fruits and veggies and they were very tasty! I googled up recipes for dehyrators and did not find much other than jerky and fruit roll up recipes.

Does anyone use one and if so, what do you use it for?

So far apples...but i am going to try bananas, peaches, and strawberries too. I'll let you know how that goes next week.
  • I have a dehydrator. There are books out there, but the best I have found is this website - http://dehydrate2store.com/.

Apples, pears, sweet potato chips, beef jerky, turkey/bison jerky, strawberries, etc
  • Fruit leather is good. We use unsweetened applesauce (with or without cinnamon) or mashed strawberries in a thin layer on a flat tray. Drying times vary, but it is a great treat!

You can dehydrate a lot of things. I would really like to get one and try one day. Bananas, Mangos, Apples, Carrots, Peas, Corn, you can make "chips: out of Kale and bread/tortilla... Not that you have to be into Raw Food diet but one of those cook books might have some good ideas for what to make with your dehydrated fruits and veggies? Just a thought.

I take apples, core them, then slice them on a mandolin to get them about 1/4 inch thick. Sometimes I sprinkle them with cinnamon before I dry them, sometimes I sprinkle them with it afterwards. While leaving the peel on is probably healthier and less work, I find that it gets really sharp when it's been dried out, so peeling is a the best way to go. Just make sure you keep track of how many you eat. :)

I made these weird truffle things using pitted dates, unsalted cashews, and cocoa. I threw them all in the food processor with a little bit of water (because the dates get clumpy quickly). Then I shaped them into little balls and coated them with more cocoa. The drying them out helped them to be less goopy.

Fresh herbs (on a lower setting) are wonderful when dehyrdated. They taste more fresh than the stuff in the jars and they don't get freezer burned like they do when you put them in a baggie.

While I don't have the patience for it, there are lots of people who are on a "raw diet" who use dehydrators to make snacks. If you search for "recipe" and "raw diet", you can find a whole lot of responses.

thanks! I love jerky and figured I'd make my own so I can cut out some sodium. I will definately try some of the others you all suggested and check out those websites!

    Thanks!
  • I use mine for jerky of course, but My new favorite thing to do is "sun-dried tomatoes". I grow romas in my garden & when they're ripe, I cut them in half, toss them in a bowl with some olive oil, tons of gatlic & fresh chopped basil. YUMMM!!!!!
