Hey,
I was just wondering what were the signs that someone may have issues with food, as in an eating disorder type of thing?

overly concerned with food, or next time they will eat....
overly concerned with eating too much (or not eating at all around others)...
    obsessive behaviors
    eating privately
eating way too much as compared with the "norm"

can you tell which kind of issues i have? lol. but unless it's yourself, it's hard to tell if someone else is having eating issues/disordered eating. but it's important to remember that it takes on all forms. not just anorexia/bulimia.

Ok, I seriously have issues with food and an obsession with eating in that case:

I like to eat my lunch when at work *privately* (basically with nobody interrupting or disturbing me)
    I always plan my meals.
I count all my calories ad fat grams (apart from on weekends  )
I always think about the next time I am going to eat (in a looking-forward-to-it sense)
I watch loads of food TV
    I love to cook
    I love to eat
I love to talk about food
I love to look at food
I always seem to have room for more food.

If we're giving opinions, I think when it controls your life. If not, read here: http://www.anad.org/get-information/about-eating-disorders/?gclid=CLKj8JmNrKwCFYqA5QodCiaj2w

LOL. Every MFP user has an eating disorder according to number 15:

"Keeping a "food diary" or lists that consists of food and/or behaviors (ie., purging, restricting, calories consumed, exercise, etc.)"

Edit: And this one: "Frequent soar throats and/or swollen glands." ...I don't trust health web sites that spell incorrectly!

Everybody copes or struggles in different ways.

For me, my eating got out of control to the point where I was making myself ill. But the realisation for me was when I became aware that food was taking over my every thought.

All I could think about was what could I eat next? When could I eat next? I can't eat anymore! I mustn't stop eating! Every thought that went through my mind was about food, but with feelings that were a mixture of obsession followed by guilt.

It got to the point where everything was spiralling out of control. I couldn't turn food down. If I saw it, I ate it. If I saw anybody else eating, I had to eat too. My weight was piling on and not only was it all I could think about, but it was all I could talk about too.

And then one day in May when I was on holiday in Canada with my boyfriend, when I should have been enjoying myself and relaxing, he got so wound up with me (and understandably so...) that he said "I don't want to hear you mention food again this holiday!"

    The penny dropped.

When I got home I went to the doctors...
  • If you are talking about anorexia/bulimia eating disorders, which I have dealt with in the past, here are some signs:

Being uncomfortable talking about food or weight.
    Eating is isolation.
    Frequent trips to the bathroom.
    Calorie counting.
    Overexercising.
    Walking around on tip toes.
    Diet pills.
Frequently saying "I'm not hungry, I've already eaten, and/or "I don't feel well."
Withdrawal from people. Not wishing to be at social gatherings.
    Purple hands.
    Purple nails.
Watching eating disorder films, reading books about eating disorders, and looking them up on the internet.

There are many more. These were a few of mine. I sincerely hope this helps.

Just because some of these might be true about you doesn't mean you have an eating disorder. For example, eating by yourself at work might be different than eating by yourself at home because you don't want to watch others eat, you don't want others to watch you eat, or you don't actually eat your food.

I've always hated others seeing me eat even when I was a kid. I am at a point now I can just about bare eating if other people are but i can't eat in front of someone if they arent as I always think they are judging me stupid really but I'm even like it with my other half.
  • Are you concerned about yourself or a friend? If you are haveing issues with food there is support out there, and honestly from experiance they are really hard to kick, I have been dealling with mine since i was sixteen and have really had to work hard at it.
