:ohwell:
I am 5'3 and 22 years old and I've been at a constant weight of between 140 - 145. I've been exercising (combo of zumba, kick boxing and other cardio) watching what I eat, counting calories and even tried over the counter acai berry pills that's supposed to boost my metabolism. Nothing works and I'm getting frustrated that I cant get the weight off. Any suggestions?

Watch your sodium, drink TONS of water, and add weight training instead of just doing cardio.

When you are working out do you do things in a routine? Sometimes changing things up will allow your body to take on a different view. I know for me I am doing a 5 week workout, I dropped my calories down to 1200. Every day it is a different work out for five weeks. But every week it is the same stuff just different days..I hope that makes since.
  • Thank u I'll try that....but I'm not sure how much sodium is too much or not.
  • For some reason, this was not the conversation I was expecting based of the topic title....

    Nevertheless...what jrdoty8986 said ^^^
  • Well I go too different classes such as rumba and kick boxing every week....so yea I guess u can say it's a routine.

You sound... just like me. I do Zumba & kickboxing every week and drink tons of water. Strangely, I started drinking green tea and the weight started coming off. Try that out? I'm not putting all the props to the green tea but you can definitely try it out. Also, you may be gaining muscle and losing fat.. have you tried measuring yourself? Hope this helps, good luck! xo

Your body doesn't need more than 500mg of sodium a day. Most people would say you should stay under 2500mg though, since not going over 500mg is near impossible in this day and age.

What is your BMR and maint calories?
  • I'm the same height/weight as you. The lowest I've been recently was 137 and it seemed to take forever to get there and about a week to go back to 142. I feel like I am never going to see anything below 140. I've heard I look a lot more "fit" and a lot less "fluffy", but I just don't see it! Try the measurements though - that does seem to make a bit of a difference. But I feel your frustration!

Right now I am doing the 30 day shred with 2-5 days of cardio, depending on what I have been able to fit in. I jog and do the treadmill at varied speeds and intervals, and the elliptical. Before that I was doing 30-45min cardio in the AM and worked on abs, upper and lower body in a rotation.

Lift some weights. Cardio in excess can reduce lean muscle tissue and lower your metabolic rate. Lift to keep that lean muscle and increase your metabolism.

If you have too much sodium, will it cause permanent weight gain, or will it come off when you cut down?

I am eating a lot of sodium lately...

No, it won't cause permanent weight gain. If you reduce your sodium intake (which you should do gradually, by the way, as well as gradually upping your potassium intake, so as not to shock your system.) and drink plenty of water, your system will flush out the excess naturally. You should probably talk to your doctor first though, just to make sure your potassium levels are normal, because you don't want to take in too much or even too little potassium. You're definitely safe to lower your sodium though.

I just weighed myself b4 bed now and I'm up more than I started at 143. Why is that???

Weight can vary several pounds even in the same day. Have to consider water, food, BM, etc.

I 'gained' 7 lbs in 2 days, likely because of high sodium intake and retaining water.

You should only weigh yourself at the same time under the same conditions.
first thing in the AM after you number 2!
Also its a good idea to ditch the scale till after your cycle finishes.
Its the best time to get a good weight.
Rule of thumb is first thing after number 2.
    =D

My body fluctuates 1-3 lbs a day.

Exact same thing with me again- I fluctate throughout the day 140 in th AM, 143 PM. But that's normal!
And I know how it is to not "look" 140 - my BF and I were shopping and the only sweatshirt left I was looking at was an XS, and he says "that wouldn't fit you??" Decieving I suppose... I guess my only suggestion is try more weight and body weight training? I like yoga a lot, and it helps build the lean muscle. I'm trying to focus more on the overall look and how I feel rather than the numbers now. I see people who say they weigh the same as me but wear a size 4... my jeans are a 10:/ Our bodies just carry it differently I guess?
