Do you incline when you walk and run?

Whenever i run on the treadmill i always make sure that the incline is at 1.0 and not comp;letely flat. I was told to do this to protect joints and mimic an outdoor run.

Does anyone else do this, and also would MFP account for this when you log?

The few times I've run on the treadmill (I prefer street running), I've set the incline at a 2 or a 3 incline. Just enough to know it's not flat, but not enough to kill my legs.

I am inclined to incline! I use 1% to better (but not completely!) mimic outdoor running. I can't go much higher as it affects my running style by making me lift my toes too much, which is a fast track to shin splints for me.

Always - I was having problems with sciatica last year after increasing my time on the treadmill and I was told that even a small incline would minimise the risk of it flaring up again. Seems to be working as it's been a good few months with no discomfort or pain

Yep, I'm an incliner:) It mimic outdoors to a certain extent, but its good for building muscles, as well. Yes, your incline can be logged just put the speed and "on incline" . Happy running/walking

When i start i walk on 0. Then i do HIIT varying between runs on various speeds at 0 incline, and walks at 12-15 incline. Works different muscles, and even walking at 3.5 on a 15 incline really takes out of me!

I do intervals....I would start with no incline then incline to 3 , but now I start with a 3 incline and increase to a 5 every 2 minutes

I walk on a treadmill and usually do incline for most of the time - 5.0 - 11.0 for my 30 minute walk...

    LOL!

Yes, and I burn more calories quicker when I use an incline! I started out flat, but now keep the treadmill inclined and it's gotten much easier... so that I don't even think about it now. I will gradually increase some more too.

I also have to be careful with shin splints, but I haven't gone lower than 2/5 in over a week... so far so good. Make sure you wear some good footwear... it may make a difference!

I wouldn't say I love hills, but my neighborhood has a lot of them so I end up telling stories that sound like a grandfather told them. "When I was a kid, we didn't have treadmills, we had to run on the streets in the snow... uphill, both ways!"

I always do an incline of at least 2 when I run on the treadmill (because, unlike Grandpa, I'm a wuss when it comes to nasty weather), but much higher when walking.

Great to see so many responses!

I often go on the treadmill and see the people next to me running with no incline but quite fast. I often wonder if they could maintain that pace with even a slight incline!

Here's a chart that shows how the incline pace converts to running flat: http://www.hillrunner.com/training/tmillchart.php

So the 8.2 at an incline of 2 (intervals... only 90 seconds at a time) I was doing yesterday is the equivalent of running 8.5 on a level surface.

My sports therapist said to incline to 2 since it simulates actual outside running resistance.
