Exercise and TOM (ladies)

I kicked up my exercise regimen last month and completely skipped my tom. This month I was prepared to be pretty much in bed for it when it came. I have always suffered from horrible cramps, into my legs, nausea from the pain etc. 800 mg Motrin made the pain "tolerable".

I was told by alot of people that exercise would reduce my symptoms. I am so happy to report that cramps were light, backache slight and 400mg of Motrin completely took the pain away.

I find a new reason to love exercise more every day!

Anyone else experienced this?

I don't really have issues with cramps but when I was marathon training last summer, I went three months without a period. It was wonderful!

I've had the opposite happen  TOM's been hanging around now for the last 6 weeks. Always VERY regular before - Dr. says I threw my hormone levels off when I started losing weight. Grrrr....I really wish he'd go away!

Glad you've found some relief...maybe one day that'll happen for me

This month I had only one day of headaches and cramping...the rest of it was like I wasn't even on my TOM...as far as all the horrible symptoms go. I was so happy. Hoping next week I won't have any headaches or cramping (but not holding my breath. LOL)

Funny! I am just going through them.. and did not believe I would be able to exercise yesterday.. and I stayed on the treadmill for 65mins!!!! (a first for me)

I feel great today & am roaring to go.. except now my butt is burning caz of the other exercises I did today. But notice the mention of the tom related pain is negligible. I am hoping the more i do this.. the more i will see similar results:-) Yipee!!!!:-)

I have always been lightly active, and very rarely in my life have I had major cramps. Some days they are bad enough for me to whine about. They have never been so bad that I would call in from work or school, or stay home instead of go out. I have been very blessed in that light.

But even though my troubles are smaller in proportion to many ladies, if I continue my exercising, they are practically non-existent. As long as I get in a jog or two that week, and a little strength training, all is well.

I really hope you see a pattern like this develop for you! Not only will you become addicted to exercising, but you will reap the benefits of less pain throughout! Best of luck to you, and keep with it!!

Um isn't that bad when you lose your period due to intense exercise? I thought that was considered unhealthy....?

Yes, and it's so wonderful!!! Your experience sounds very similar to mine. That's crazy that you get cramps that go all down your legs, because I do, too, and no other woman I've ever talked to about it, knew what I was talking about. They just get them in their abdomen and lower back. I get mine in my abs, lower back, and all the way down my legs to my toes! Ever since I started my period at 11, I have had hellacious periods. Clots, overly heavy flow, and excruciating cramps. I always had to take at least one or two days a month off from school, because I would just be lying in my bed, tearing at the sheets. It was horrible. They even prescribed me birth control when I was that young, because they said it would help take the edge off my periods. No pain reliever helped, except Bextra (prescription painkiller), which made it, as you said, "tolerable". So yeah all of that helped, but even now at 23, the norm is that they are extremely painful to where I can't really go anywhere or do anything. Exercise was definitely off the table. Now that I exercise frequently, though, I have even found I can exercise during my period, and it makes me feel better!!! I can take a motrin, and I'm almost completely pain-free, my mood is better, my cravings are less intense, I feel less bloated. It's great! So glad that you and I both are experiencing this!

I've been eating less and exercising regularly since the last part of November, since I was diagnosed with High Blood Pressure.
I've lost 25.5 lbs so far.
Normally I'm not bothered by cramps during that time of month, but instead I get migraines that lasts half a day or longer - and my prescription meds don't always help.
Feb. 2011 was the first month that I've been thru that TOM that I didn't have a migraine!! Major celebration - let me tell you!!
I'm not 100% positive, but I credit my exercising & weight loss for my not having the migraine.

Wanted to let you know that my roommate for years had this trouble. It is not common but you are definitely not alone! I can't quite recall what they offered her to help (she was only 15), but I think it was birth control. She never did start exercising, and only gained weight. I think she still suffers, even though I send her info and give her upbeat advice. I'm really glad you AND the original poster have started exercising and saw a great new turn in events!

Yeah, it was a rough time. When I was 11, it was pretty sad looking back, because I was just so young that I would get depressed every month, like, "Why does it have to hurt me so much?". But thanks!!! I'm glad, too! And I really hope your room mate finds a solution that helps her!
  • This whole week i haven't been able to exercise because of TOM!!! it's irritating to say the least
