A very philosophical question put forth by one of my friends and I want your input.
In Death Note, you die if your name is written in the notebook (I'm not going to go into the whole show... ) you die.
However, if you change your name and somebody writes your name in the Death Note, do you still die? why do you think that?

I think you still die, because the name is a representation of who you were and thus will stay with you. You cannot change the core of who you are...even if you change your appearance and persona, you will be the same person at the core.

ps: A name is only a way of easily calling someone. If you do not remember someone's name you can still say something like, "That person whos name used to be ____" or "That guy with the red hair and weird voice." ^^

so do you think it would be the same as if two people have the same name, it's the one who you are thinking of when writing it?

Yes. Feelings etc are most likely transferred as well. Ever went into someones house and felt very warm and cozy? Or howabout felt very stressed and cold? Vibes ^^

That was the major flaw of the series.... names are artificial and arbitrary - people give each other names so how does that connect with someone's soul?

how would it work if a person was under an alias, such as people in the witness protection program? I mean it could be the same, but I want some debate!! (friendly debate that is)

hm... didn't L fake his name on a newscast once, but he wasn't the one to die although Light was thinking of him? i haven't read the manga in a while.

that is true, so the name isn't really the important part, it's the person you are thinking of.

OMG!!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE!! boogiepop and lain and I've never met anybody else who did!! I am friending now!!!
  • Maybe it depends on what they think their name is..? Like, if they identify with the new witness protection name then it would take.
Example: I'm born Jane Doe, but when I go into witness protection I become Edna Mode. If I still consider myself Jane Doe, who is going by Edna, then Jane Doe would be the name that would apply.

I'm with gasinshotan, though. Names are definitely arbitrary, so that's why I'm going with the self-identification bit. :) [It would also explain the fact that L was able to use aliases and avoid dying... possibly..? It has been a while.]

he doesn't die when "he" makes the tv appearance because when Light pictures L, he's picturing the wrong person.

I agree with the first part....but your second part is completely wrong...it says that you need to have their name and their image in your mind. Not just "Oh..that one person who said this" "that one person who has red hair" It stricly says write their name and have their face in your mind

Haha deathnote was too shallow and predictable compared to these.... I mean the change of the main character into a selfish killer was stretched out too long!

I wish there was a live action series of DN, although I loved the movies. I wanted to see L's successors duke it out.

I think they explained the whole changing name thing.

You have to have the name that they identify themselves with and an image of what they look like in your "mind's eye"(so to speak) as you write their name down.

    PS.
    Welcome to NHK is amazing.
