Why do I find this so hard? Why do I feel fat and swear never to touch another bad food then two mins later am downing a bar of galaxy chocolate? I know im an emotional eater - but it's every emotion that makes me eat - Im sad, bar of chocolate to cheer me up... I have had a good day... bar of chocolate to celebrate... its ever ending!!!
Im also incredebly lazy.... so after i've been at work all day I just want to laze about... no excercise.
Any tips? HELP!!!

Remove temptation. If there's not chocolate sitting around you can't eat it. For working out the best thing you can do is pack workout clothes and take them with you when you leave for work, that way you can go straight to the gym after work.0

i've started reading books abt nutrition. when i'm lazy and feel snacky, i pick up a book and start reading. it helps!0

as hard as it is, the only thing you can do is... just do it. I find that when I get home it's best if I hop right onto the treadmill or into my workout routine. My best advice would be DON'T sit down until you've had your workout. Start with small, doable goals. Small changes are easier to sustain. You can do it!0

Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels.
Why do you have that crap in the house? Don't buy it. I know... I eat emotionally too. I'm stressed about work, & losing my job, & the economy, & not finding another job, & not being eligible for welfare, or unemployment insurance... I stress. I stress-eat. I tried keeping fat-free 60cal Jell-O pudding cups in the house.... only to eat all 6 the day I bought the groceries. So... I guess I can't buy that anymore.
Don't keep the crap. If you have to leave the house to GET the crap, you're less likely to eat the crap. You have all that time when you're driving to the store, shopping, paying, driving home before you EAT the crap to think... "Hey? Do I *really* want this crap?" And half the time, you'll talk yourself out of it on the way TO the store. It's started working that way for me lately.

there aren't any "bad" foods, per se. but how you nourish your body...with the types and quantities of ingredients that are available, well, that determines how your body responds.
you said it yourself: you feel a particular way and so use a substance to change your mood....and you are choosing not to exercise. change your thinking and you change your behavior.0 -
If I work out in the begining of the day, there is no way I'm going to eat something super bad. My way of thinking is that if I eat something bad, then I just worked my butt off for nothing.0

I agree with the others. It helps not to have them around!
Also, reading nutrition books help as well as another member mentioned. Sometimes we just need to get something drilled in our minds over and over again until it just clicks.
Perhaps discover some healthy food that you can snack on instead as well. Also, logging in what you ate helps you see the numbers and nutrients to keep you accountable with what you put in your body.
Join a challenge on MFP! Sometimes it helps to have a concrete goal to work towards with other people instead of by yourself.
You know if you continue, it's just going to be an endless cycle. Unhealthy food makes you feel worse than you already do, you eat more to medicate those bad feelings and so on. You don't have to do a 180. Start off with little things that can get you on the right track.
You can do it. You just have to start saying "no" to things that are bad for you.0 -
Thats the thing - I don't keep the crap in the house - no way can I!!!
I'll buy it on the way home from work, or go out and buy it...

OK, as hard as it is, you just have to start really working out. I was tired ALL the time, by the time 2 in the afternoon rolled around I felt I had to nap. I didn't have the energy to do ANYTHING. I joined the gym and FORCED myself there 5 to 6 times a week....FORCED. Once you start exercising, you will want to fuel your body with better food. It comes naturally. I have only been doing this for a month, but I feel so much better. I have energy all day, and laying on the couch is bottom of my priorities. The scale hasn't moved much, but my clothes are fitting different. Good luck:happy:0

You need to look at it in a different way. I don't forbid myself ANYTHING but I understand finally that I can't have everything I want all the time. I have a little bit of chocolate every day but I don't gorge myself on it. If I plan on having a less than healthy meal then I make sure I eat very healthy the rest of the day and do a little extra exercise. I believe in earning those treats so if I don't want it enough to earn it then I don't have it. Good Luck.0

gosh, I wish I knew the one thing to say that would do it for you. Your note could have been written by me for many years...seemed like no matter how bad I wanted it, I just couldn't take it off and keep it off. I don't exercise much either, and find it very hard to get myself motivated in that regard.
I do know that I went through a lot of gradual change even before I came to MFP. A mental professional once made the excellent point that whatever behaviors we've chosen to deal with stress are darn near impossible to change as long as the stress is present. I'm a stress eater, and I have always had a fair amount of stress in my life. Rather than struggle to lower my stress level, I've changed the foods that work to help me cope. Now a cup of fresh raspberries works the way M&Ms used to; grape tomatoes work like potato chips used to. And so on.
I also know that the only thing that has ever worked for me is counting my calories every single day. It used to be a real pain to do that, which meant I didn't stick with it. MFP does a lot of the "heavy lifting" for me...I've averaged 1.3 pound loss per week since I've been here, which I'm very happy about.
I don't know what finally flipped the switch in my head...perhaps getting older and wanting to take better care of my health. Before that, there were other (better) "reasons" to stay the way I was.
Hope at least some of this helps!0 -

OP, emotional eating is a hard habit to break. There are tons of tips out there to help you with recognizing the signs & stopping yourself before grabbing that chocolate bar, if you do a quick google search on it. As for eating better & exercising, it's okay to start off with one or the other if both are a bit overwhelming at first. I'd suggest starting with your eating. Once you get used to eating healthier & making more fulfilling meals, the better you will feel & then you can start adding in some cardio to your day. There are some great tips in this thread. This is just one of those things that you just have to do it for yourself to get it done right.0 -
Thanks!!!!! First day - so far so good!
