Does anyone else have this problem??

Whenever anyone gives me a compliment (re looks) I think they must be taking the piss. I was raised being told I needed to rely on my brains as my looks weren't really great, and also constantly having attractive people pointed out to me. I know it wasn't done maliciously but it has left me with a whole scoop of chips on my shoulder re my appearance.

first off, i love how you new zealanders talk. second of all, think of your self like a cake. everyone just sees the frosting, and while the frosting can be awesome, its whats underneath that really matters in a cake, whether it be chocolate, vanilla, with strawberry filling. i forgot where i was going with this, but now i'm going to go get me some cake.0 -
yupp i sure do /:0

I always feel uncomfortable about compliments on my looks....I don't know why. I would prefer no one said anything!0

It can be hard to accept a compliment when you've been raised a certain way. I'm always stammering around downplaying what someone just complimented me on. We have to learn to just say thank you, and accept it! Now I think I need to go get some cake too!0

Honestly, men say so much **** just to get in your pants, I caulk most of their compliments up to lies.0

Meh, I used to have a hard time with it but now I don't.
I know how hard I've worked and how far I've come.. and if someone wants to boost my ego by telling me that, then by all means I'm going to let them!0 -
I feel uncomfortable too! No matter who (male or female), I always end up blushing.. I guess it comes down to not really liking the way I look, and being insecure and thinking they might be saying it out of pity or something. Learning to love yourself takes time I guess0

I try to appreciate it. I like when people notice the little things about my appearance. I was raised similarly to you. To this day I don't realize when someone is actually attracted to me unless he or she's obvious. I don't see myself as "hot" even when someone else tells me I am. I'm satisfied with my appearance, but it's just not something I think a lot about.0

Totally, I'm always making fat jokes about myself and saying "I'm not" if someone calls me hot or something and a guy actually told me that my lack in confidence is actually quite off-putting so suppose I'm gonna just have to learn to accept them0

LOL this chick is hilarious! I thought I was a man hater lol lol lol!! I have to agree w her ! I do however think you are beautiful and should take it in and thank the person! Smart and beautiful! Thats the package!!0 -
Well, I'm the person making all y'all uncomfortable, because I'm always complimenting everyone on their looks XD
The other day though, this lady saw me, and was all "Oh wow, you are so beautiful"
and I said "thank you'-because I always say thank you,and move on...
but THEN she was all "No, really, you are"
LOL, I had no idea how to take that, I hadn't thought she was lying heheh....
but really, don't take compliments too seriously, just say 'thanks' ;D0 -
It is really hard for me to accept any compliment...i was raised as the ugly duck and the not so smart one...currently I'm the only one in my family that possesses a PHD degree and I'm the most attractive, but I don't see it...all I see is negative comments of the past. So, when I get a compliment all I think is " are they blind?".0

After all my years, I'm still a little skeptical at times when people give me compliments. Depending on the person, I may take them seriously, I may think they're trying to "butter me up," or I may think they're just trying to be nice. I generally make a judgment, but with the realization that I may be wrong. Regardless of motive, I respond to all compliments in the same manner, with a simple "Thank you."
Remember, different people will see you in different ways. I was having lunch with a male friend one day and thinking to myself, "He looks handsome today." I really felt that way, but the thought actually shocked me because this man, who was witty, confident, intelligent, sexy, and everything I thought a man should be, had a large hook nose, an unattractive mouth, and a physique that lacked definition. He had so much going for him, good looks would have been overkill (and might have spoiled him).
Your profile photo is attractive. Remind yourself that most of the people who compliment you are sincere. I'm sure that's the truth! Relax and enjoy the compliments!0 -
ummm I used to...but dang it I have lost 40 pounds! Yes I would rather be complimented on my brain but damn right now I am 43 years old and haven't been this size in 21 years! So when someone compliments me on my weight loss or how great I look I usually say thanks, I feel even better than I look!0

You guys aren't making sense. So a guy who finds you unattractive tells you that you are attractive so he can get in your pants? Why would he want to get in your pants in the first place if he doesn't find you attractive? Very strange.0
