A Supplement to counter fluid retention? HELP!

I have a question.
I was reading the "body and soul" liftout of the Sunday Mail today, and there was a piece on a product called Fluid Away. A herbal supplement to decrease fluid retention. I honestly feel that fluid retention is one of my biggest issues with shifting weight (apart from not eating right, of course...). I find that even if i haven't been over on sodium, if i don't drink buttloads of water in a day i retain SO much water! So on days when i DO have an increased sodium intake, it literally seems to take the next four days of chugging water to get the fluid out.
The other thing that caught my attention was the fact that it talks about having supplements in it that can increase energy... I have a SERIOUS problem with always being completely exhausted (the 65-year-old nurses at work tease me about being more tired than them all the time!), and the idea that there might be something that could combat that AND help with my water retention issues is really appealing.
However, i'm more than aware that i might just be falling into a well-marketed trap and gimmick, but it's not like i'm going "i want to lose weight faster, maybe this will help". I've spent the last year monitoring my fluid retention, so i know that i do have an (even if minor) issue with it.
What do you guys think?

If you know why you are exhausted all of the time and know what causes the fluid retention, then I say fix what you can. If it continues to be a problem, then you may want to get checked out by your doctor. There's nothing wrong with supplements per se, it's just that it makes more sense to me to correct what is causing the problem in the first place then trying to fix it afterwards.0

If it sounds too good to be true - it probably is. This product is no exception. This would not be something I would recommend anyone take. (and I am not anti herbal medication).
I am assuming you already have had a conversation with your GP about this to make sure you know why you are retaining fluids. There could be a number of reasons why you retain fluids which require medical attention.
I did not the comment on sodium - so continue to pay attention to how much sodium is in the food and beverages you consume - that is how you get fluid retention. You may want to keep a log so when you do see the GP he or she will know what you have taken in. Use of compression stockings may be useful - but talk to your doc about that.
I completely disagree with 2bFitNTrim. There are lots of supplements that are completely useless. Where they help the most is to the bottom line of the manufacturers and sales people. Eating better is always a good idea, but my hunch is there is something else going on.

I agree with the eat better and drink more water post.
Yup, sounds gimmicky. If you are wanting to "balance" out some sodium intake in your diet, try increasing your potassium - broccoli, beans, bananas.
Enjoy!0 -
I wouldn't take that, but what I would take is specific B vitamins. B12 helps with energy, and B6 deals with fluid retension. But I do agree, that a chat with your GP would be a good idea.0

Coming from someone who has major issues with fluid retention myself, I understand the frustration. I drink water like there is no tomorrow & minimize sodium as much as possible (do not look at today as a good example - it's an off day where I had a treat & I took an xtra water pill to help combat what I knew would swell me!).
I take a natural supplement daily, it's made by Country Life, called Water Factors. I take one every AM (during TOM, I may take 1 in the late afternoon/'early evening): I also take Vitamin C, CoQ10 & B-complex every AM which seem to work well together. All the same brand (I have Celiac's & their products are gluten free so I can take them without reactions). Check out VitaCost.com for the best prices - I've been ordering from them for several years now.
I understand fluid retention very well: I don't eat pork, pickles or olives anymore due to the amount of sodium (except in very rare instances, I'll have a pickle or olives), and I limit it as well as I can by eating non-processed foods as much as possible (again, due to having Celiac's that is safer for me at any rate!). When I'm more "balanced" I'm more energetic, feel stronger, more "alive" and just have an overall better "feel" of everything so I strive for that balance. If there are foods that bother me (my Husband actually watched me swell within minutes of eating a bite of pork!) I avoid them as much as possible. Yes, it stinks, but these are the cards people like us were dealt. We either complain & gripe & do nothing to change it, or we say, well, this isn't for me I'll find something better. I prefer the latter :flowerforyou:0 -

Traditional Medicinals Organic Cranberry Water Weight Gain tea worked for me. I lost five pounds in a week, which was my water weight. I have the same problem. I also have an allergy to wheat, cumin, pork, and other foods, so having a food allergy test could be helpful as well. Here is the link to the tea-

Not disagreeing with you. I agree that there are lots of supplements out there that are either useless or dangerous. Please note I did say she should eat better first, then check with her doctor. We should all try to be healthier with a good diet. I did not intend to say that nothing wrong with supplements at all; of course there can be something wrong with many of them. Some are helpful, some are not.0 -
Here's a holistic recipe from Jilliam Michaels for losing water weight - I drink this everyday for a week during my period to help with bloating... maybe it'll help with your water retention issues too.
- 60oz of distilled water
- 1 tbsp sugar free cranberry juice
- 1 dandelion root tea bag
- 2 tbsp lemon juice
Mix together and drink chilled.0
