Are Diet Pills (and the like) Cheating?

[WARNING: I'M ABOUT TO SOUND LIKE A POMPOUS *kitten*]

This may not be a popular perspective but I, personally, feel like taking 'DIEt pills' is cheating. Same with the HCG and any other 'magical bean'.

Obviously there are real medical conditions that require something more than nutrition and exercise but on the whole it seems like too many people are looking for that magical bean that sheds 75lbs in a month.

I'm interested to see what others' opinions are.

Definitely cheating your body and mind. What happens when you stop taking them? That's right, you haven't learnt anything and all the weight comes back!

For those of us that are compulsive overeaters....No Magic Bean will make us stop.

The true magic was to finally accept the fact that I was a "compulsive overeater" and find a program that will help me....That's my Magic Bean..

I do not think it is cheating, although they could carry health risks.

And no, I do not take them and never have.

I don't think it's "cheating" necessarily but if you want to lose weight and keep it off then you probably shouldn't use them. You'd be better off changing your food and water intake and increasing your activity. That's what I do and I've lost 32 pounds so far and plan on continuing to do this.

There is no magic pill to loose weight. Just healthy eating and exercise. Take those diet pills and you are just kidding yourself.

I think things like that are a quick fix and people tend not to change their bad habits that got them overweight in the first place.

For me... diet pills are cheating, they are a tool I use to assist me on my journey. My biggest struggle is fatigue. I have fibromyalgia, and all I ever want to do is sleep. Even after drinking 2 cups of coffee this morning I could easily use a nap. So I take D-Ribose in the mornings to assist with that, which is something athletes like to take when they train. I am also currently using a "diet" pill called Methyl-Drive. But I watch my calories and do atleast one workout EVERY day. So I am not counting on it to shed the weight for me, just need the energy boost so that I have the energy to do my workouts.

I think it is cheating. It cheats you of learning the proper habits and self-discipline and they are pretty harsh on your body (despite whatever the labels seem to claim) which just derails you further.

Honestly, once I started eating 'clean', taking a complex B vitamin and truly stuck with the proper mix of strength/cardio... my results were FAR better than the psuedo stuff I EVER got from diet pills.

It does take a longer stint of time, but the results are lasting, unlike diet pills.

Keep at it! You will be pretty pleased with yourself :)

This plus all the health risks that comes along with diet pills. As for HCG, I don't need a homeopathic drop or shot to help me eat clean.

  • i dont think taking pills is cheating, having said that, if somebody is severly obese that doesnt have the option of losing the weight by exercise should be prescribed (them in moderation) to help them get down to a healthier weight so that they can exercise and follow a diet plan. I knew a few people i worked with that were MAYBE in the 150 region (at the most) that were prescribed adapex. (which is a crazy diet pill) and i didnt think they should be prescribed it. The pill could make you shred 20-30 lbs a month but you also dont eat but maybe once a day and you have to force yourself to do it. Also, taking diet pills once you get off of them if you do not follow a diet plan or exercise you will gain the weight all back and then there was really no point in buying the pills to begin with. Only the weak take pills and stuff like that because they do not have the strength and the will to make it through a diet and exercise regimin. We are all here because we WANT to lose the weight knowing we did it ourselves with the help of friends, and that is why we will all succeed, and those who take all that stuff will not!

Not sure how taking a diet pill can cheat your body and mind but who said cheating is a bad thing? If it helps someone get to their ultimate goal why try and turn in to some huge tabu topic.

Also when you stop taking them if your diet and exercise program is on point you generally continue to lose weight.

I know that there are a lot of adverse side effects to many of those "quick diet magic beans" and that people should be wary of them. I had a classmate taking these diet pills 6 times a day for way over the recommended amount of time. She was in the hospital several times due to infections in her kidney, and still continued to take them.

I'm not in a position to judge another person for using them, but if you are or are thinking about it, I think it's very important to do some research before purchasing anything. As for "cheating", I don't really have any right to say whether it is or it isn't. It would depend on ones personal viewpoint about it.

If it is cheating, the only person being cheated is the person taking the pill. Some people feel that way about lipo, gastric bypass, etc. to boot.

I don't see how someone's choice is "cheating". It isn't as though we are competing, and they have an edge. It is a personal decision.
  • No I don't think they are cheating. I think the people who are taking them and seeing results are those that are making changes in their eating styles and activity levels. The supplements can help control appetite and increase energy. The whole "fat burning" thing though... eh no. Without the ephedrine I don't see them working in that way.

Yes I have taken them before, I like a little boost here and there if I need it
(not HCG though.. that is a whole different story)

People who take diet pills are considered cheating if they lost weight because of the pills and claim that they've done it because of diet and exercise only.

This is mostly the case with a lot of diet pill though. You aren't going to lose weight with them if you arent dieting/exercising

Do you consider one who takes insulin to treat type 2 diabetes a cheater? Or one who takes meds to lower cholesterol levels a cheater?

You can't cheat if there aren't rules.

For me, I would feel like I was cheating, because I am an able-bodied person who is capable of losing weight on my own. I think they may help you lose weight, but at some point you will stop taking them. Unless you have built the skills to maintain your weight loss, you will gain all the weight back. I have watched my aunt do this several times. I think there are cases where extremely overweight people need that extra help to get started, but it should never be done without medical supervision. There is no way to know how these things are going to work with someone's body chemistry or interact with their medications, etc.
  • I take a multivitamin. Is this cheating too? Since I could get the micros from my food?

Exactly, funny how people will snub their noses at fat loss pills, yet think it perfectly fine to take vitamin b and other vitamins and minerals that they could easily get from eating the right foods. Quit being a bunch of hypocrites
  • ^^^ I'm glad I'm not the only one who sees it this way.
