I've been going to the gym 4-5 days a week for the past month. I lost over 3lbs in the first two weeks but then I just stopped losing weight! Ive actually gained it! I burn 400-800 calories a day when I go to the gym and usually eat back 1/2 of the calories I burn. This has happened to me before (when I actually start exercising I GAIN weight) and it stopped me from going. I just put a boat load of $$$ into this gym membership and actually love going! I do Zumba and the eliptical and always the gym looking like I just dunked myself in a puddle. I feel great and it looks like im slimming down...
BUT WHY AM I GAINING WEIGHT!?!?!?

Easy. You're gaining muscle, which is denser than fat. So as long as you are getting fit, and visibly slimming, it's all good.0
-
your most likely gaining muscle, do you do measurements?0
-
muscle weighs more than fat but takes up less space. Do what your doing for a month or two, and instead of going by your weight, only go by your measurements (hips, chest, waist, neck, thighs). You will notice that your body gets smaller.0

are you consuming a lot of sodium? Your body retains water when you work out to help repair your muscles... You might have to change it up. I rarely had this problem tho -- i dunno. I don't eat any of my exercise calories back -- sometimes i do end up using some of my exercise calories up when i go over but very rarely0

How is your food logging? Do you log everything that passes your lips? Can you share your diary?0
-
^^^ Ehhh, probably not. It takes a lot to gain a pound of muscle. A LOT.
My suggestion is maybe it's your muscles retaining water. If you are working them really hard, they may be holding on to it. Just keep doing what you're doing.1 -
nutrition is number one. are you paying close attention to your food? eating the right amount of protein? logging everything? you're not at too low of a calorie deficit, are you?0

My first 6 weeks at the gym I was eating like a saint and going 6 days a week burning heaps of calories but hardly losing anything. I was getting really deflated and then I measured my waist and found I had lost 8 cms. WOW! Now I do not put so much emphasis on the scales and use a few methods to measure whether or not i am having success.
You also have to be careful that you aren't rewarding yourself with food because you are exercising regularly ie. "I'm going to eat that treat because i did xyz at the gym today".
Stick with it and you will start to see results that are much more satisfying then what the scales will give you:)0 -
It's almost impossible to gain muscle on a calorie deficit.
If you're doing the same workout ever day try changing it up, also make sure you eat a variety of foods. Not sure if that REALLY does anything, but it worked a bit for me.
It's possibly just water retention which would pass.
Give your body a bit of time =]0 -
Definitely NOT muscle gain after only one month. Muscles may hold more fluid after intense exercise, but that's not increase per se.
You say you look like you're slimming down? Have you taken measurements? you know like waist, hips, chest, thigh? Have they changed?
If you're loving the gym, then go for it, at the very least, you'll be getting much fitter and healthier. You might need to tweek your diet abit, have a look at the NIH site for weight loss or the Mayo Clinic site for some different ideas.0 -
I thought it was muscle too, but I hardly do any lifting. The water retention seems like it might be the culprit! I dont really know how to eat "healthy" I am just limiting what I eat and how much of it I eat. I am a faithful food logger 95% of the time. Maybe if I share my diary people will give me pointers b/c I really have no idea what to eat and what not to eat (except that veggies are good...white bread is bad lol)
thanks for all the comments/help!0 -
If you're going to the gym 5 days a week, and only eating back half of the calories per exercise, I would then ask what exercises you are doing.
Are you doing cardiovascular or strength exercises? Although weights training does use up calories, they make you gain muscle mass in the process and muddle up the figures.
My advice? Try a week of light cardio only and test the results. If you pull a 1-2km run a day, I believe you'll see a significant change.
And assess your goals - which is more important to you right now: do you want to lose weight or gain muscle mass? You can do both, but you'll be gaining weight as you see here.
As a point of reference, I go to the gym three times a week:
I run once a week (5km run at 10km/p/h).
I do weights the other two days, about 45 mins of chest/biceps/shoulders.
With this type of workout, I see an average loss of 1kg a week. Every body is different, but why not try to change you're routine and test the results?0 -
muscle weighs more than fat but takes up less space.
muscle does NOT weight more than fat. 5 pounds is still 5 pounds whether it be feathers or bricks. Muscle DOES "take up less space." If you took off 5 lbs of fat from your body and replaced it with 5 lbs of muscle, you would weigh exactly the same, but because muscle is more "dense" than fat, the 5 lbs of muscle takes up less space and so you would appear slightly leaner and/or thinner. Your weight naturally fluctuates throughout the day, so it also depends on how often you weight yourself.
Are you eating a lot of salty foods?
Do you drink enough water?
are you close to starting you period?
How often do you weigh yourself?
Do you change up your workout routine so you cause muscle confusion and your body continues to adequately burn fat calories?
Do you incorporate weight training with your cardio?
there are several factors that could be causing this0 -
Under the best of conditions, you can typically only gain 2 pounds a month of muscle. And that takes effort.
What is probably happening is your body is retaining more water because of your increased activity. If going to the gym 5 days a week is a new thing, your muscles are having to do a lot of tiny little repairs to themselves and they need the water to get it all done. Once you settle into the routine and your body is used to that level of activity, the water weight will probably drop. In the mean time, like others are suggesting, start taking measurements. If you are losing inches but gaining weight, it is almost certainly water you are gaining, while also losing fat.
I also read an article a while back that said when you lose fat your body will sometimes fill the fat cells with water temporarily, because your body doesn't believe you will keep losing weight and wants to save the space for fat to come back. After a while your body will figure out you aren't going to be gaining anymore fat and start to let that water go. I can't find the link now but will post it here if I do.
The number on the scale isn't the only thing that matters, you know what you are doing is good for you so stick with it!0 -
Since I just joined the gym officially (instead of a temporary student member) I am going to have an orientation session where I believe they take measurements. Its a shame that I dont have measurements from when I started. I feel smaller and tried on a size 12 pants yesterday!! (they were a little too tight to actually wear in public, but at least they zipped!) My weight number has always been an issue for me though. My heaviest was 222 and when I tell people that, and that I weight 190 now they dont believe me! Those darn numbers just haunt me and I want to finally look at the scale and say, "hmm, that's not bad!"
My body is still probably in shock from all this consistent exercise and doing exactly what everyone is saying! (retaining water)
I really appreciate all this advice & support... I probably would have quit in a week if it werent for this site & peoples support0 -
You should add sodium to your diary. And drinks lots of water. I would suggest trying to even out your meals more maybe. Almost nothing for lunch and a lot at dinner. The bigger meal might want to be earlier in the day.0

I usually have a very balanced meal plan with 250-400 for each meal but today was my dads bday so we went out to dinner & I tried to save my calories for that meal! I splurged hardcore today -_- LOTS of sodium tho haha0 -
Who cares if your gaining weight, take your measurements and if you are slimming down it's because you are trading muscle for fat, meaning your going to look toned and lovely0
-
I know EXACTLY WHAT YOUR GOING THROUGH, AND IT SUCKS. Lol well it doesn't suck because I am actually leaning out and gaining muscle, but literally the scale has only gone down 4lbs in the last two months. I am DEFF. more toned, especially my arms and legs! When I tell people how much I weigh they're suprised. ANYWAYS. I have decided to not look at the scale anymore. It is way too discouraging, I am going by how my clothes fit and how I feel. But that stupid scale is always there in the back of my head! Anyways, my trainer has too told me to stop weighing myself because it is so discouraging. I think we put too much one weight! If there is someone who is 200lbs of fat, and 200lbs of muscle obviously ther person who weighs 200lbs of muscle is going to look way more fit! soooo screw the scale! Go by how you feel! or maybe just weigh yourself once a month? As for me I have decided to just stop weighing myself completely until I feel confident enough to put a bakini on...... And even then I might not just because that stupid number can have so much power over me!0

Hmm... I dont want to sound like a liar or crazy....
BUT I WEIGHED MYSELF TODAY AND LOST 1.4 LBS!!!!!
I think maybe I needed to get the frustration out and off my chest. I went to bed last night thinking "ya know what, I dont care what that stupid scale says. I feel good and will continue to feel good if I keep doing what I'm doing"
I guess personal pressure weighs a lot. 1.4 lbs to be exact0
