Just read an article that stated women who suffered from constipation or IBS that walked 30 minutes a day had relief from their symptoms.

Of course there is the usual question, are you eating enough fresh fruits and veggies, drinking enough water, taking a fiber supplement if needed etc?

constipation will make a difference on the scale because you are basically storing excess waste and until you get rid of it there will be a small amount of weight related to it.

    try:

eating yogurt with live active cultures, and oatmeal/cheerios (soluble fiber), and more beans/veggies
drink more water (to push the fiber through)
more exercise (particularly yoga) to help move food through.

Acidophilus works for me...It is best from a fridge at a health food store or the yogurt others have discussed helps, but the acidophilus is a capsule with the same active ingredients(when you don't have the yogurt).

Sorry all but water does not help my constipation ( I drink about 2-3 litres a day):noway: . I have a Hypo active thyroid this and the medication I take causes constipation.:grumble: but I have been taking a Colon cleanser tablet (all natural ingredients), Green Tea capsuls and Aloe Vera capsuls and eating a high fibre breakfast cereal with yoghurt for breakfast and "Walla" problem solved, bowel works somtimes twice daily.
Why not try it if it works for me ( chronic long term constipation) it may well work for you too  :drinker:.
Good luck I know what it is like and it's not nice:grumble:

Ever since i was pregnant with my daughter i have had horrible constipation. No amount of water helpded and sorry i just can't stand prunes. My most recent discovery is Raisin Bran. That stuff has been awesome. I have been eating it for the last few weeks and finally i have relief.

Other types of fiber i have tried have given me cramps or gone too far in the other direction, but so far Raisin Bran has been wonderful. It is really the only change i have made recently so i am pretty sure that is the reason.

:drinker: :drinker: :drinker: that water and here is why.

When you eat foods with lots of fibre in it and or take fibre stuff like Metamucil WITHOUT water, it actually does the opposite, it will make your constipation WORSE! For regularity, you must eat foods with fibre and/or take fibre stuff like Metamucil WITH lots and lots and lots of water. It is actually the water that combines with the fibre that makes it bulk up and makes you regular. Walking, yoga aids in what's called peristalsis.

Ok, hope this helps. I've gone through it years ago and hope you'll be better soon!

    :drinker: :drinker: :drinker: that water!!

Yes constipation effects weight gain because you could possibly lose weight but wouldn't know it because your locked up- I have suffered with it for many years swollen stomach in pain just horrible my doctor has given me scripts that didn't work it even got to the point where she scheduled me to see a GI specialist which I dont want to do

However since I started this new meal plan I am instantly going again- Go figure-
I eat alot more protein and complex carbs absolutely no simple carbs such as breads pasta- anything prepackaged no dairy- today is my 3rd day and I noticed a difference after the 1st day seriously-Good luck try some miralax they sell it over the counter- Don't eat any of those prepackaged fiber anything foods stick to the natural stuff like sweet potatoes and vegetables- And don't forget your water--

If there is a Trader Joe's or a Whole Foods near your home, go and buy yourself some Psyllium Husk. Pour it in one cup of water before a meal, and drink it. It is pure fiber, and will help even the hardest of poops to come out.

At Trader Joe's it comes in a container, at Whole Foods you can buy it in bulk, so you can buy just a little bit, for 2 days and try it out. It works like magic.

I suffered from constipation also for many years and tried everything on the market with no relief. Then I suspected that I may have a lactose intolerance, so i cut out everthing dairy. After a couple of days i was going to the bathroom with no problems. I have continued with a mostly dairy free diet, and I can tell when I have had too much lactose because i immidiatly get backed up. Don't know if this could also be your problem but it wont hurt to try.

I just had to add my 2 cents. :flowerforyou: I started putting 1/2 c regular fiber one in 1/2c yogurt for my evening snack. In the morning things are moving. i just have to be careful not to eat more than 1 serving or things will move to much...lol:embarassed:

My son had a terrible problem with constipation - actually we had to take him to the hospital while on vacation last summer because he had an intestinal blockage. 7 bags of enema cleaned him out REALLY well... he lost a total of 9 pounds. He was miserable.

For about 6 months after we were instructed to give him Miralax twice daily. Miralax is awesome because it has no taste or texture so you can mix it with any kind of liquid. Once his body learned to regulate itself - he's been much better. He hated drinking water too - so we mixed water 1/2 and 1/2 with some juice.

My sister also has an issue and has found that drinking a tea called "smooth move" - sold at a lot grocery stores - helps. She drinks it nightly and goes faithfully every morning.

Walking will help to get things moving as well. Try to stay away from a lot of processed foods and eat more fiber rich foods and you'll find that you feel MUCH better. Eating whole apples is a great way to get things moving.
