I have been on MFP for about a month. I'm 5'7" and 146 lbs right now. I'm not looking to lose a ton, just about another 13 pounds and get back to the weight I was most of my adult life before things got a little out of hand!:noway: From everything I've read, and my experiences so far, I realized that I'd like to change how I've been doing things a little bit. Mainly, I want to step up my cardio, and also pay closer attention to what kind of calories I'm eating.

However, I'm leaving for a cruise on Saturday and it will be a 100% break from exercise, eating well, etc. That's a fact. I know it's possible to go on a cruise, indulge and still be sensible, but I'm not doing it.

So, what does everyone think- I do make these changes (stepping up the cardio big time, changing the quality of what I eat) now, or wait until we get back and then start stepping it up then? If I do it now, it would only be for 5 days. But, I'm not sure what's best as far as having success, being best for my body, and for my sanity (what's left anyhow!)

So, now, or after vaca??? I appreciate your opinion!

Start now.... if you lose 1 pound in those 5 days, you'll have 1 less pound to lose AFTER your vacation!

Eat better now and exercise. Both are better for your health and shouldn't be put off.

Do what you can now. And...most cruises have a work out room or you can get in a morning walk. I'm not saying to spend all your time but a little will help keep things in balance.

Start now and try to make good choices on your cruise too. I'm sure you can even fit some exercise in on the cruise. It really isn't ta\hat difficult. My husband and I were away a couple of weeks ago and we made time to exercise first thing in the morning so that it wasa done for the day

I went on a 7 day cruise in 1999. I was nice and slim when I walked on the ship, but was a big fat tubbo when I walked off it 7 days later! I even had to get off the ship to buy bigger clothes towards the end because I'd gained sooooooo much, between the food (all you could eat, 24 hours a day!) and all those yummy HUGE sweet drinks I kept downing.
I told my husband that if we ever go on another cruise, I won't be sitting in the hot tub with my sweet drink watching and laughing at the people jogging around the ship! I WILL be using the work out room and doing TONS of walking and swimming too. AND, HOPEFULLY, eating and drinking ALOT less too!
Sooo, after being so long winded, I'd like to agree with everyone else, start your new lifestyle change NOW, rather than after ALL the damage you can do on your cruise!

I was just reading the other post about having to buy bigger clothes after a 7 day cruise.... I went on a 7 day cruise a couple of yrs ago and packed exercise clothes to "workout" while on the ship...yeah right!!! Not once!!!!!! I dont recall gaining much weight from it though...but I ate everything I wanted to eat and I also treated myself to the spa a couple of times. I can't wait to go on another one...:flowerforyou:

Kelynn, where are you going? Your picture looks like El Morro, the castle in Puerto Rico. :flowerforyou:

Glad you decided to start now. Hope you have a nice, relaxing and safe vacation! I found it pretty easy to do a lot of walking on our cruise. We walked the whole boat, enjoyed the sunset on the top deck and did a lot of walking while we were at port. I didn't worry about what I ate, though, because isn't that the reason you go on a cruise?! :) Enjoy!!!

We're leaving from Puerto Rico and going to St. Maarten, St. Thomas, Tortola and (my favorite!!) Bermuda:happy: . I'm not sure what the picture is- just found a picture of the ship on the internet to use as my motivation!

And yes, ngwife4life, the whole point of going on a cruise (in my opinion) is to NOT worry about what you eat- you're exactly right!

I'm sure we'll do a ton of walking, but I am not making an effort to "work out" on the cruise- also the point of a cruise, in my opinion.

Getting really, really excited- I can't believe it's finally almost here! :drinker:

well that turned me off ever going on a cruise. I thought the whole point of a cruise was to see lots of different places without having to live out of a suitcase. If it is all about the food and sitting on my duff... I don't wanna go. I did that for many years and that's why I'm fat

I knew it!! Yes, that is El Castillo del Morro in Puerto Rico. I am from there. Once you see it you are coming into the Bay and see Old San Juan, it is beautiful. My 7 day cruise was out of Galveston, TX (live in San Antonio), we went to Jamaica, Grand Cayman and Cozumel. It was fabulous. We are planning on taking the same ship now, The Conquest, but now it goes to Key West and two places in the Bahamas and then back to Galveston, TX. Enjoy!!!!!! :flowerforyou:

To each's own, I guess. To me, the best part of a cruise is that you can make it whatever you want! There are people that go on a cruise and want to just relax and live life at a slower pace for a week, and there are people that do just the opposite- they want to see everything and do everything that they possibly can in that week!

I understand where you're coming from completely. I was just saying that for me personally, one of the best parts of a cruise is the food and the relaxing- that's what I choose to do. As other posters have noted, it's very possible to go on a cruise and continue to eat healthy and be very active. I'm simply not choosing to do that, that's all. If you're interested in cruising, I say go for it! You can go, and have a great time without over-indulging on food and without sitting on your duff all day. That's the best part of a cruise- you can make it exactly what you want it to be!

In case you didn't guess by my screen name, I love cruising! I hope to be pretty far along in my weight loss journey by the time I leave on my next cruise in September. I'll be more established in my healthy lifestyle and should make some better choices. That doesn't mean I won't eat, drink and be merry, but it means I won't go all wild and crazy and gain a ton of weight while I'm gone. I always take the stairs whenever possible and love walking and exploring the ship. Next time, I plan on walking/jogging on the track on the upper deck and I might even use the spa area for more than just a massage. I guess what I'm trying to say is, all things in moderation!

Have a great time on your cruise! We'll be here when you get back!

alf1163 - Did you like the Conquest? My last cruise was on her, and my next one in September is on her. She doesn't go strictly to Key West & the Bahamas, just alternates between there and the other itinerary you took. We're going to the Bahamas this time. I'm looking forward to it!!!

(That's the Conquest in my ticker.)

Cruisin_scrapper, YES, I loved the Conquest!!! It is actually the biggest ship Carnival has. It is huge!! It was our first cruise and my husband wanted to go all out...we also got the cabin with a balcony. I thought it was just going to Eastern Caribbean now, good to know. But if we go we want to there since we did the Western Caribbean trip. I know people that do the same cruises over and over and see different things one time. I guess that is a good idea but I like a change in scenery because I never know if it will be my last one... We are planning on cruising again this Dec or early next year. We have other trips planned before then.

kelynn, the picture on my ticker is of Old San Juan, you will also see it when you leave Puerto Rico and come back from the other islands. I just hope you dont leave at night although it will be pretty as well. How exciting!!! I'm getting excited for you!!! Please let me know how you liked it when you come back.

    Happy Cruising!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :flowerforyou:

    NOW NOW NOW

that way when you get back you'll be anxious to get back on board (the plan, not the ship ha)

and having started this plan, you'll be less likely to go overboard (stop it with all the puns lady)
when you get on that cruise ship

ditto. Start now AND do something during the cruise. You'll feel better about yourself and you'll enjoy the vacation more with the added endorphins in your system!

Oh, and yes I did start NOW. Stepped up the cardio today big time and have been much more picky about what kind of calories I'm eating. I rarely went over, but I realized that I could be making better choices. Thanks for all the advice, everyone
