Prozac

I've started Prozac about 2 weeks ago and noticed my appetite has decreased and I have less obsessive thoughts about food. I'm wondering if these changes are attributable to the Prozac. Has anyone else experienced this?

Prozac is one of the antidepressants that has a reputation for helping with weight loss, so this makes sense. Hopefully this will work with your weight goals as well as your emotional goals! I wish you the best. I was not able to take Prozac (bad side effects), but antidepressants saved my life and changed my life.0

I had a friend who experienced loss of appetite when she was taking prozac. She lost about 30 lbs.0

And yes, Prozac can also help with obsessive thoughts.
I take Effexor for anxiety, depression, and OCD. It has been WONDERFUL for these things. Unfortunately I do believe it is partly responsible for a 20 pound weight gain. I'm willing to accept that as a consequence, and hopefully I can deal with the weight gain through self discipline.0 -
Most antidepressants have appetite suppressants in them. Typically a side-effect of taking a stimulant.0

Gosh, that would be so nice. That's just what I need to help with my boredom/stress eating habit0 -

Anti-depressants are not the same thing as stimulants, and they also don't have appetite suppressants in them. Just want there to be correct information out there (coming from someone who prescribes both of these things). However some people do experience both decrease in appetite and improvement in obsessive thoughts from taking an antidepressant, even after just a couple of weeks.0 -

But there are antidepressants that contain stimulants - which causes loss of appetite.0 -

That's a really bad reason to start taking prescription pills.0 -

I am not taking it for weight loss. I have depression and anxiety. Keep mean comments to yourself.0 -

Edit: Wow - sorry. I just realized you were the OP. I wasn't paying attention. My apologies.0 -

It's alright. I have good intentions with taking the Prozac. I have been depressed for some time and have subsequently turned to food to cope. I am just hoping the Prozac can help me feel better and get back on track.0 -

I hope it helps too.I had the same problem, I'd eat everything in sight when I was depressed or stressed out. Wellbutrin has helped me a lot - I gained about 20lbs the first few months after I started taking it. But I think that's just because I was just so happy to feel normal, I didn't have a care in the world - including about my weight. hehe. But since I don't have horrible body aches and lethargy all the time anymore, I can actually work out and I actually care about myself too. Psychiatric medicine can definitely do some amazing things - sometimes it's just hard to find what you need. Best wishes to you on your journey!
Stay positive - and definitely start exercising if you're not in a routine already. It truly does help with depression.0 -
I was the same. When I was before and during taking Prozac (for depression) I completely lost my appetite and obsessed over food a LOT. I'm not taking them anymore but I still have those thoughts.0

I lost a lot of weight when I was on it as a kid, but I had also started exercising more around the same time. However, I don't think I would have lost weight nearly as quickly if I had just been exercising. I noticed I did gain some back when I went off of it. I've often wondered if it really affected it, or if it was all in my head!0

Shoot, I gained 10 lbs when I started Celexa.0
