Hiring Someone to Clean

I prefer consulting with real people rather than search engines. Thanks for your input!

I'm a mom, and I work two jobs. I don't want to clean when I get home; I want to spend time time with my little girl. I'm thinking of hiring someone to come every two weeks to clean. Here's what the job would entail:

How much would YOU pay the person to:
1. Vacuum/mop floors
2. Clean bathrooms
3. Dust surfaces
4. One other task that needs to be done once a month, such as clean baseboards or dust blinds

What about going through a cleaning service?
  • Depends on how big the house is.... My mom has cleaned houses for lots of years and the pay rate in our area is $15-20 an hr....

I would research prices in my area first.

I had a live-in maid for a while and she made life very nice ^^ If you can afford it, she could also help raise your kids (ex. take the cost of daycare, and invest it in her instead). ^^

I already have someone in mind. She told me to decide the price.

We used to pay ours 125 to clean living room, family room, both bathrooms, and the kitchen. This is a little low though, we were getting the friends and family discount.

My mom keeps my daughter, but thanks for the suggestion!

Mine was $60/visit not including tip - weekly - 1500 square feet - Wisconsin - for an individual, not a service.

How would you describe the area you live in? Rural, suburban, or city?

This sounds about what I was thinking. Mine's 1700 sq. ft. Is your area rural, suburban, or city?

$10.00 - $12.00 perhaps? That is what my friend made for cleaning hotel rooms, which I am sure is probably a lot messier then ur house. Oh the stories I would hear...

The girl who cleans my house charges $20 / hour. My mom lives on the East Coast and goes through a maid service .... I think she gets a team of 4 for an hour and 15 minutes and pays something like $150 - $180. That's a big company where all the employees are bonded, etc. versus someone cleaning houses on the side.

My mom cleans houses. She generally gets $20-$25 an hour. She charges more if there are pets or lots of bathrooms.

I clean for a few places. I charge between 10-20 an hour depending on the size of the place :)

    1) How big is your house (square feet)? How many bedrooms/bathrooms do you have?
    2) Do you live in a area where it would accumulate more dirt than others (i.e. AZ with desert, or L.A. with lots of smog, etc)?

Nevermind. I saw the answers to these questions got posted as I was typing.

I think the rates that others posted are reasonable. Depends on their experience as well too though so I would take that into consideration.

Sorry, missed this. I lived in the city, then moved to a suburb and it was the same price both places.

I've never paid a by-the-hour rate. I will pay more on the very first visit, like $125. The bi-monthly visits, I'd think $70 sounds fair for your size house. The once a month cleaning should be a little more, so maybe $90. Hope this helps!

Oh.....and I've never had my housekeepers do laundry. They'll do the things you listed.

For the first visit, I pay my cleaning lady $100.00 and $75 for each visit after that. I live in Miami but I guess you can call my area the suburbs!

A friend of mine has hers cleaned, and her cleaning lady charges $15/hour with a minimum of two hours (and we're in a rural setting). Hope it helps!

i pay $12 an hour for up to 4 hours a week (plus $20 tip). my house is a 3000 square foot two-story (4 bed, 4 bath) in the suburb of a large city. on a really messy week, it takes the full 4 hours, but most of the time can be done in 2 1/2. mine is more of a housekeeper than a maid, meaning i prefer things looking neat and tidy rather than focusing on clean but still surrounded by clutter. i don't mind if the house doesn't get dusted weekly if all our stuff is picked up. my housecleaner will put away toys, rearrange cabinets and fold laundry which many typical 'maids' won't do. she has also cleaned the interior of my refrigerator when asked. i <3 her.

Our house is in the suburbs, 2 stories, about 2400 sq feet, 4 bedrooms 2.5 bathrooms. She comes (roughly) every 2 weeks, for 3 hours, and we pay her $66, so $22/hr. She rotates doing things like bookcases, fridge, china cabinet, kitchen cupboards & drawers, etc. I usually spend an hour or so the day before going around and picking up piles and straightening up.
