Teachers....too tired?

I've been teaching for about a year as my training year (full time GTP course) and I have just started supply work however I'm finding that I get through the day and then straight after tea I crash.
Im so tired and usually have to nap to get any marking/planning done and then end up late to bed which means less sleep before the early morning rise.
Does it get better? Im starting to worry there is something underlying and other teachers dont crash like this in the evening.
Help! Should I be asking my doctor?

It will get better. The first year is hell but it eases up. Good luck!0

it does get better! get yourself on a schedule, with a bit of a workout before your day begins...light on the tea/supper until your body works out the new ever-demanding schedule.
plenty of water thru the day will help tremendously...and good shoes, too!0 -
I'm a student teacher and substitute right now, and on days I'm in the classroom, I come home and crash. I got 9 hours sleep last night and I still passed out when I got home today.
I think it is an adjustment period. Your body needs to get used to these hours. I'd give it a bit more time.0 -
i taught school for five years. the first year is very hard but it gets better. i am not teaching this year, as i have gone back to grad school.. not sure i will return to teaching. its a hard job.. and i kinda got fed up my last year anyway. but- it DOES get easier.. if you feel this is your calling then stick it out!0

Teaching is very tiring. So much work and personal investment. You should join us in the Teachers Take Charge group here. You can get advice from newbie and veteran teachers alike!

Supply is extra tough. Once you get a permanent position and a stack of resources and experience to draw on you will get on top of it. I was much better in my second year. This term is a particularly tough one, just hang in there it will get better. x0

It does get better, I agree! First year or so is exhausting. Are you applying for full time positions? I've done supply and can honestly say that having a full time job in one place takes some of the stress out of it, once you know exactly what you'll be teaching and how the school works.0

I taught grades 6-8 for four years and was often blown-out tired. It does get better, especially if you figure out WHEN you need to eat and how much sleep you should be getting. My suggestion is to get to bed early and work out in the morning. Keep a regular sleep schedule, even on the weekends, and avoid the nap which is probably throwing you off. Are you sleeping well, deeply through the night, or is your sleep interrupted?
Also, check your Diet/Fitness profile (under settings) and ensure you have chosen the appropriate activity level (Active). This may increase your allowed calories, which would probably boost your energy levels.
One last thing to consider is WHAT you're eating. Perhaps you aren't getting enough protein, or carbs, or are low on iron or potassium, etc. You may even have a slight sensitivity to some nutrient that's making you feel lethargic. Personally, I felt my energy level and mood stabilize a great deal when I dramatically reduced carbs for about four weeks.0 -
OOOOh thanks everyone feel better now, Im not going crazy
I sleep very well Bhan, lol not much can wake me unless I worry but on supply that doesnt really happen.
I am applying for full time, when I can find positions, there aren't many floating about right now but the suplly at least is getting me recognised and I might finally become that internal candidate that gets the job! (all my other interviews had internals )
Glad to know it gets better. Thanks for replying! xx0 -
This is my first year as well. The first 2 wks I was like why am I so tired? I didnt think it was that tiring. Well come to find out, took a pregnancy test and was positive....
Anyways, it is draining...I'm hanging in there...I'm not sure what the future holds next yr if I'm going back as teaching or be a stay at home mom....0 -
I'm a substitute teachers aid.. I go to bed at 8:30-9 and get up around 4-5 am.
First few days of this year, I crashed and burned when I got home.. and now it's better that I'm used to the routine.0
