What to eat when away from home

I am going away on Sunday afternoon, back Wednesday late. Off to a conference and we all know the sort of food served there. So I should be able to control breakfast and dinner. Where I am staying has minimal cooking facilities, so what are some good healthy foods I can take with me, preferably highish protein and lowish carb.

  • Great question - I'll be interested in people's answers too as I'm going to be away from home at a conference for pretty much all of next week! It's going to be harder to fight the good fight with all those drinks/nibblies tempting me! Haha

I take protein bars when I am away. And also try to do lots of walking if I can to make up for the extra calories. Even if you get up early and walk an extra 15 min in the morning, 15 min at lunch and 15 min before dinner, it will make a huge difference. Either that or I will run everyday - in the morning - otherwise I will never make it.

if you have a fridge where you're going then i have a great healthy meal for only 283cal ...its not really low carb though (it has 28grams of carbs) but its super yummy...1 ezekiel sprouted grain large tortilla, nitrate free sliced chicken breast or turkey breast, 1 Tbsp of pesto, baby spinach and some tomato (you can add avocado too for a little extra calories ) i warm the tortilla for a good 30 sec because if you don't it won't fold w/o breaking then i add the pesto on the tortilla and the rest of the fillings and make a wrap... it is a nice fresh filling meal w/ so many possibilities...sometimes i add 2 strips of precooked bacon if i'm feeling a little naughty and need some crunch =)

I wish. The motel has no cooking facilities, not even a microwave!
  • I've been eating special K meal bars. They are low calorie, good for when your on the go, and fill you up pretty well. Fruit is good too, and nuts. Those are mostly snacks though. You could always buy a pre-cooked chicken from the store. It will last you a few days and chicken is good for you :)
