Questions about exercise and calories, etc.

I just started on this website today (11/16/11) and am also new to message boards, blogs, etc., so I'm not sure if I'm doing this right...but here goes... I do different exercises that aren't in the database, such as working out on the Total Gym (endorsed by Chuck Norris and Christie Brinkley) and sometimes floor exercises/stretching with Miranda Esmode-White on MPT. How can I find out how to calculate calories burned for these exercises?

Also, when I enter activity in the "strength training" section, it doesn't calculate that I burned any calories. Is this right?

Thank you for your help.

cardio will 'burn" calories for the tracking and while strength training does burn calories (it can not NOT be burning them because you're using muscular energy to contract etc) there are so many variations ie you doing your 10 reps in 30 seconds with X weight and someone doing 10 reps in 20 seconds with Y weight...

Welcome. Have a stroll through the FAQ... http://www.myfitnesspal.com/forums/show/474-unofficial-mfp-faq
  • Thank you Guru and Pandorian for your quick responses!

Pandorian - Do you mean that I can just estimate how many calories I burned doing the non-cardio excercises and add them to my daily calories allowed (and then eat more for that day if I want to)?

I wouldn't suggest estimating but the variations is why MFP doesn't really give you a calorie burn for lifting weights, you can always get a HRM (Heart Rate Monitor) but they themselves are geared towards cardio... You can look under cardio for weight lifting if you really want to get a calorie burn recorded.

    Hi There,

If you go into "strenght training" or "circuit training" under "cardio" it will calculate a calorie burn.

    Good Luck!
