Your best tips for motivation

What are your tips for people who really are lacking the willpower to go to the gym or not eat that last bit of cake and are feeling unmotivated because they are on a plateau or their clothes don't feel any looser?

I'm fairly new to all this but here are my top tips:

Get an old dress or pair of jeans that almost fits you but not quite. Leave it hanging up so that you see it every day and think of yourself fitting in it - if you don't have something old, go out and buy something new that is a size too small! Set a goal day that you will try on the outfit.

Get yourself registered for a sponsored run or even organize one! Make sure it is a few months away so you have time to train for it. The people at my work are going to organize one for the summer and it really pushes me to run that little bit further on the treadmill.

Any others?!

I just look at my disgraceful food diary and sort it out...or plan ahead and add the things I'm going to have and the exercise I'm going to do... I often then go UNDER the calories IN and OVER the calories OUT! :)

My health is the biggest motivator. I went to the doctor in August and basically I was silently killing myself. I went from a person that did not care to someone that is losing weight and for the first time in my life not sabotaging it. I like MFP due to when I am sliding or feeling frustrated someone reaches out and revs me back up.

Oh, the jeans one makes me sad. There's nothing worse then walking past it for a month and they're still too tight. :(

Now, what i do is this; (i'm a littel obsessive compulsive though) "I am going to walk my dogs 5 miles every morning before breakfast for one month-no exceptions. I am going to do 45 minutes of cardio every day for 20 days. I am going to lift weights for an hour every other day for a month. I am going to keep my food journal up to date and not miss ANY days for one month." Once i say it, i can't go back or it bugs me all day (there was one day i didn't eat breakfast until noon because i hadn't walked my dogs-i was trying to get out of it and convinced myself they looked sad because they missed walkies ARGH!)

Then, once i'm in my workout-i say "okay, i ran this far without stopping last time i ran-i want to go one mailbox farther today. I did X reps with X weight last time, i either want 2 more reps or 5 more lbs of weight!"

Really, though-my motivation to get up is usually my dogs. They'll stare at me and i'm like "i'll walk them as soon as i'm done working out" so then i have to get my workout done so i don't feel like i'm neglecting them :P
  • I surround myself with supporive/postive people...my family, my boyfriend and friends on here..once somethng postive is said about my weight loss or what im doing..pushes me to keep going and never give up:)

what really helps me is logging in everyday, and reading what everyone else is doing. Also my husband has started to ask where my food diary is at and makes sure to cook something for dinner within my calorie budget.

My final motivator is that my girls that i walk with in the morning... I don't have any of their phone numbers so I can't back out. I have to show up or call the gym if I can't make it. Nothing, Nothing is worse than having to call the gym to say you can't make it walking.
