How to compliment someone on their weight loss

I just finished reading "What is the rudest thing someone has ever said about your weight?" and it made me think; conversely, when someone loses weight and you either notice or you notice something is different and you just can't pinpoint it, what do you say? Is it appropriate to mention the weight loss if you're not sure because what if they haven't lost!

You're looking great, did you get a haircut?
Then they say, no, I lost some weight.0 -
I would just say....You look FABULOUS, and leave it at that..... :flowerforyou:0

"You look great!" seems nice enough of a compliment.0

Probably shouldn't mention the weight loss even if you're sure of it. Just say they look great!0

someone I havent seen for ages the other day popped back into my life with a staggering weight loss
my reaction
OMG you look stunning - think is said it all without mentioning the weight loss
I would love be thought of as stunning
try to say something you would like to be said to you0 -
The words "have you lost weight? you look great" will brighten up even the gloomiest face :happy:0

I got a lot of 'you look well' when i lost weight.
Its probably a good thing to say- because if people say 'you're looking great- have you lost weight?' Implies that you didnt look so good before......0 -
I take all the complements in the spirit they are given. I know I looked bad before and have lost a lot of weight. The only "complement" that I really took offense to was "I am sooooo happy for you." (Of course you have to know the woman who said it is the most condescending person I know.) My response? "Thanks. Me too."0

I like to throw out a compliment that makes them think. Something like >>> "What am I supposed to call you, now that you're not "fat *kitten*" anymore?"
What can I say, I like to make people feel good about themselves.0 -
"Hey, you look less fat"0

Noooo some people would be very offended by you saying they had lost weight. Unless you know them very well, or they already told you they were trying to lose, you really shouldn't do it. Rude.

Really? It always works for me.
I've just asked my colleague because I'm not the most sensitive person in the world and she that she would say pretty much the same thing.
I've had people I don't know tell me that I've lost lots of weight etc and it really brightens my day. It doesn't matter that I don't know them. When I put that much effort into something I want people to notice and I want them to tell me they have.
Why would you get offended by a compliment? I don't get that.0 -
Just dont ask someone if they are pregnant . If you're not absolutely sure you won't have to ask. I made that big blunder once!! Never again!!0

I have lost 15 pounds since last February. I just recently saw 2 people whom I have not seen since last February and they both said..'wow, you look great! you have lost weight!'
I was not offended.....I was doing the happy dance in my head!! I was not seeing a difference and for people to 'compliment' me (yes, I took it as a compliment) made me very happy.
One girl I have known forever, the other I only met a handful of times.
But that is me, some people would take offense (not sure why, because it is a compliment in my eyes!!)0 -
It makes me feel good when someone thinks I've lost weight.0

I think it maybe depends on how much weight the person has lost.
If they've lost 100lbs and you say "have you changed your hair?" I think it would be too obvious that you're trying not to mention the weight loss.
I think if the person has lost huge amounts of weight then they would probably be feeling great about it and wouldn't mind if you asked them
If the person has lost say 20lbs, although it's still an amazing achievement I think it's more tricky not to insult them by asking if they've lost weight.
But generally in my experience I've never met someone who isn't happy to be asked if they've lost weight!
Hope I've made sense!0
