HRM that measures distance?

I need something that will measure the distance I travel on my runs. A calorie-burn read-out would be nice, too. Any thoughts on what I should use?

I use the garmin 310xt. I love it. I believe it is the most accurate of the gps watches as far as calorie burn goes.0

I have a Garmin 405 that i bought a few years ago. You can track intervals, calories, distance and more with it. I love it, and rarely run without it....
edited to add: mine comes with a chest strap for the HRM.....0 -
You should consider getting a garmin forerunner 410. https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=142&pID=83274

I have a garmin 410xr (or some letters after it) I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!0

I have an old HRM, and a company issued iPhone. I use my HRM for calorie count and for fitness measurements, and you could use imapmyrun app in iPhone. I know this isn't a direct answer, but may give you or others ideas about possible alternatives.0

Important thing to know about the Garmins they calculate your calorie burn off of your pace as measured by the satellite. They won't calculate a calorie burn for stationary activity (like treadmill runs). It WILL tell you your heart rate but not calories burned. For that you need a regular HRM.
Qualified to add I heard they had a more expensive model that does act as a regular HRM but I don't know if that's true. I have the 305. I love it!
^^this
Sometimes I wish I could use mine for Zumba, but I can't. Only when running (and not on a treadmill).0 -
I currently use MapMyRun on my iPhone. You can find it in the AppStore. Gives you total distance, pace, and a guesstimate of the actual calories burned.
Most of my running friends, though, have Garmins and I'll probably be moving that way soon. Reason being, I wear my iPhone on my arm and if I want to glance down to take a look at my pace I can't do so easily. Plus, I want to start doing interval training and the Garmins allow you to track laps and all that.0 -
I have the polar rs300x hrm (tracks calories burned, etc) and you can get a foot pod attachment for it for tracking your speed and distance.0
-
The newer, more expensive Garmins have the HRM based calorie burn. If you run on a treadmill alot you can get the footpod that will track your mileage on the Garmin also. I started using mine a few weeks ago and it works great.0

GARMIN just be careful which one you buy. I had a 305 and returned it because it didn't work for giving me a calorie count unless I was road running because it calculated my calorie burn based solely on my factors and distance without taking hr into consideration which I found exceedingly confusing because it had a chest strap. I mean what was the point of the chest strap if you're not going to use the hr for anything, to look cool? The models in the 400's are better (and more expensive) in this respect. If I was doing a lot more running I would invest in a 410.
If you already have a good hrm and just want to be able to track hour runs using gps, well there's an app for that.0 -

Yep, Garmin is awesome for that. I use the Nike+ iPod system for several years and found it annoyingly inaccurate. I've had my Garmin 205 for about 18 months now and I'm not sure how I ever ran without it. I truly love that you can set your intervals by time or distance and never have to look at the watch or run them on a track because it beeps at you so you know when to speed up & slow down.0 -

This isn't necessarily true. Some of them wont, but I know for certain the Garmin 405cx does. I had one for about a year, and it will work on the mill, but you won't get distance unless you get the foot pod accessory. I've used it for both running, riding, and circuit training indoors....0 -

Depends on the model of Garmin. My 405CX for example calculates the calories based on heartrate. That is the main difference between the 405 and 405CX.
As always with electronics... it takes a little bit of research before deciding on "The One".0 -
Okay, I knew I'd find it. Here's the copy and paste from the email I had with Garmin right before I (with tears in my eyes) returned it last May:

Dear [allabtlm],
Thank you for contacting Garmin International.
I would be glad to assist. The Forerunner 305 will not give an accurate calorie count for indoor activity. The Forerunner 305 does not
use heart rate based calorie computation. Calories are calculated based on, time distance and pace and this would require satellite reception unavailable indoors.
A list of all our heart rate based calorie computation devices are shown on the link below: The only two that do not give heart rate based calorie computation are the last two on this link (Forerunner 305 and the Forerunner 405)

Subject: Forerunner 305 not counting calories in "other" mode or indoor exercises.
Message: I bought the Forerunner 305 to replace my Polar HRM when I took up running. I am a fitness instructor and needed a HRM that would fit both my indoor needs and my new running program Garmin HRM's were suggested to me. I am not getting a calorie count for my indoor exercises and am looking for a fix.

Yep, my 310XT does too and it's waterPROOF. Plus, it tracks cals indoors when you aren't using the gps.0 -
