Tips for surviving Thanksgiving

1. You can put gravy on anything. Not just the turkey and the potatoes.
Pro-tip: a lot of times the turkey is overcooked and dry. Gravy helps it taste better

2. When you load up your plate, make good use of the room. You can stack food on top of each other to create a dome-like shape. Or use 2 plates. Ask someone to help you fill them with food since both hands are occupied.
Pro-tip: a lot of times we say things like, "oh i'll come back for the green bean casserole later", but when "later" rolls around it's all gone. so it's better to grab it up front.

3. You might think you're full, but take a deep breath and focus. Chances are you can eat several more bites.

4. If you really are so full that you can't force any more food down, put your plate aside somewhere and go sit on the couch. Take a small power nap. When you wake up, chances are you'll have room for another plateful, or maybe some pie.

5. Don't try to log any of this. It will take forever to itemize everything, and the estimate will be far off anyway. You can make far better use of that time eating pie and hanging out with your cousins, nieces, or nephews.

These are just some of the tips that have helped me survive Thanksgiving in the past. I hope they can help you too! :flowerforyou:

#3 is my favorite. It's good time to employ guided visualization.

If you dream it, you can do it!

SURVIVING THANKSGIVING FOR ME WILL BE MAKING IT OUT WITHOUT GAINING WEIGHT. I plan on eating smart. And far from familys eyes, so everyone cant pick at me for not eating enough and stack my plate with food or guilt me into eating more. I don't plan on undoing progress, and the holidays always get me.

True, but I prefer to "ruin" my food as my family calls it by putting ketchup on my turkey

I don't think I can gain 60lbs in a day. I don't plan on undoing anything by enjoying a couple days of food and family.

Does someone drastically overcook it, or do you just prefer it that way? I smother mine in cranberry sauce. Really the only reason I like Thanksgiving is the cranberry sauce. I eat it by itself. It's a side dish. lol

Good luck with that! With MFP, you have to tools to keep you on track. I don't need my family to force feed me, I'm pretty good at it myself. :flowerforyou:

^That sounds lonely and sad:( It's not all about food....it's about getting together with the ones you love to appreciate all the good things in life. There are people out there starving and homeless, what they would give for a beautiful meal and family time. To hide in shame far from the families eyes is not a healthy attitude. One day does not undo all your hard work. It's all about learning moderation. Food is not the enemy!

My #3 would also include: "Rub your legs with your hands repeatedly while taking a deep breath. This action causes food to move through your stomach quicker therefore making room to stuff more food down your gob."

Also, #6. When you're nearing "wafer thin mint" territory, remember: there's always room for a cold turkey sandwich at midnight.

I just want to add a personal tip:

    6. When sitting around on your butt playing card games or watching the game keep a plate full of different desserts handy so you don't need to get up and walk away from the game in order to pad your butt some more. This ups your chances of being a double winner.

They might run out of one of your favorite pies.

Take a slice of each to prevent this happening.

When I was a kid, we had family potlucks pretty frequently. I developed a technique of putting food onto my plate in layers. First you want to build something to contain the runnier items; use dense foods like stuffing that will not let the green bean casserole or creamed onion escape. Your bottom layer should be made of the denser foods and their very runny counterparts. Then you would start on the second layer. Obviously you don't want anything runny here but you can do the lighter items like mashed potatoes. This method enables you to get one plate with twice the food.
