I just had the weirdest/funniest/rudest grocery shopping experience. I was low on protein powder, so that was part of my order. I split it up, so that I could pay for my personal things (such as the powder) on one card, and then the joint stuff for my dad and I on another card.
There was a young man on the till I went through with my order, and immediately I knew he was going to be a pain. He started asking me why I split my order up, so I told him. Then he rang my protein powder through, and the conversation went something like this.
Him: Why do you need something like this..?
Me: Uhh, I like protein shakes?
Him: Are you trying to bulk up or something? *laughs*
Me: No... it's just nice for after a workout, and I'm not going to bulk up from using that.
Him: Why don't you just eat more?
Me: I eat plenty, I assure you.
Him: So weird, usually girls like to "bulk down". You really want to look like those super veiny muscle-y girls?
Me: *almost speechless at this point* Almost all of those women use steroids, or are insane. I'm not going to bulk up from using that...
Him: Well it sounds to me like you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.
Me: =O

After I got home, I called the store to report that this just happens. I'd be very satisfied if he got fired, jeez.

hey now -- don't hate on the cashiers and baggers, I would hate to do that all myself with two kids hanging on my legs. And I'd hate if those people were living off welfare instead of working their arses off......!0 -

You actually took time out of your day to try and get somebody fired for that? He probably honestly had no idea and was just trying to make conversation. Shame on you. No, seriously. Shame on you.

My goal in calling was not to get him fired. Under any circumstances, it's not ok for someone in this situation to question a purchase like that, and go on to tell them that they "have no idea what they're talking about". I "took time out of my day", because it was rude and offensive, and it disrupted my shopping experience, and that's something that a store needs to know in order to keep their quality of customer service up.0

You know what, this has really upset me. I work in a grocery store and we are trained to make conversation with customers in an attempt to be friendly. If you buy dog food, I'll ask what kind of dog you have. I'm also a full time student, there aren't a lot of jobs I'm qualified for and I find your 'perspective' that all grocery clerks are unintelligent to be entirely unfair. You could tell right from the bat that he was going to be 'difficult?' You think all clerks are dumb? You don't think that shows a little preconcieved bias on your part?
I'm sure this kid had a line of people to help behind you and forgot the entire conversation within seconds. I really hope that manger got your ridiculous complaint and threw it right out. And if this poor guy suffers vocational consequence at your hand, I think you should feel bad.0 -

I'm leaning towards the later. If you think that the conversation I posted originally is completely acceptable, then best of luck to you, and good luck keeping your job.

There was nothing blatantly offensive in that entire conversation. He didn't call you out and insult your weight in any way. If anything, he was saying 'you don't need this, you're already thin.' It's a compliment.

Maybe he doesn't know the boundaries of socially acceptable conversation. I think a great many people don't think about what they say and how it may affect others. Great reminder to filter what your message is and how it would be recieved, and that's not just in the grocery store!0

Wow this seems unnecessarily harsh. Having been a cashier myself, I get that you're supposed to be friendly and make conversation, that's good customer service. I also get that we're only seeing one side of the story and it is online so it's very hard to discern context and tone but it seems the kid was being condescending, judgmental and rude, three things that are definitely not conducive to good customer service. Someone good at customer service would have taken the conversation down a different, less insulting path ("Oh, that's interesting, I've never tried protein powder before." Or (to be super flattering) "Well it seems to be working for you!").
And even if it wasn't his intention to be insulting or rude, being able to gauge a customer's reaction to the vein your conversation is following is also important. I would think it would have been pretty obvious that the OP was offended by his comments yet he kept right on throwing them out there. Anyone with any decent customer service training would have cut themselves off and apologized (or at minimum, kept their mouth shut for the rest of the transaction).0 -

It just doesn't make sense to assume this person was trying to be nasty against their own interests as a customer service rep. Sure, he might have made a mistake or not known, but every protein powder out there advertises as a supplement for building muscle using buff football players and bod building models and I think it's a reasonable one to make.0

I think the laugh and the fact that he told her she didn't know what she was talking about means he was being nasty in most people's opinions. Also, splitting up an order is not an uncommon occurrence, asking about why seems like too personal a question for me. It is the customer's prerogative to split their order any way the wish for whatever reason they wish.
I've had enough years of customer service to know when to keep my mouth shut and when I've insulted someone, whether it was intentional or not. He overstepped his bounds and offered poor customer service in my opinion, if you disagree, that's fine but I don't think attacking the OP for lodging a complaint when she legitimately felt insulted is really the best approach.0 -

to the person who's complaining that she called the store... uh, it's one thing to "make conversation" and another thing entirely to blatantly tell someone they're buying something they shouldn't and be snotty about it.
People shouldn't have the right to demand others lose their jobs because they interpreted something they said as offensive.
I interpret the cashier as meaning he thought OP didn't need the product because she already looked good, so he asked why an attractive thin woman would want a product marketed toward bulky men. Given his knowledge of protein powders, he thought the powder would make her bulkier.
Since she was splitting the order, maybe he thought she'd put the powder in the wrong cart by mistake.
This is all very logical to me.
The OP admits herself that she 'could already tell he was going to be difficult." That's just not fair. If you thought that before you even talked to him, of course that's how you'll take the conversation. She all but decided to complain about this employee before the conversation even started.0 -
Ok, ok, I feel that I should make this very clear. When I phoned to place my complaint, I made absolutely no suggestion that this guy should lose his job. I strongly feel that if a store doesn't receive feedback on experiences like that, they have no way to stop it from happening again and again.0
