Hi!

I love warming up some soup for lunch, especially in the winter months. I have recently become a vegetarian and that doesn't leave a ton of canned soup options!! Lately I have bought Muir Glen's vegan line and they are really tasty but crazy high in sodium. So here's my question:

Can you recommend any specific canned soups that are vegetarian or vegan and also lower in sodium/reduced sodium?

I love Heatlhy Choice because of their sodium counts, but does anyone know if they make vegetarian friendly varieties?

Obviously, I *can* go though the entire soup aisle and look at every can that isn't labeled chicken this or beef that. I would hopefully like to avoid loosing a few hours of my life doing that. LOL

Why not make your own? TONS of great vegetarian/vegan soup recipes out there. And they freeze really well.
  • i agree with making your own. then you can control how much sodium is in it, which is the problem with most canned soups.
  • Check out the Amy's line of soups and chili, they have some low sodium options and I really enjoy their soups.

The Cream of Things soups are usually vegetarian... except for the cream of chicken one... There's tomato soup... Clam Chowder if you are okay with eating clams... Cheddar broccoli, creamy potato soup...

But honestly, cut the salt and make your own in a crockpot! It will freeze nicely and you will have soup for the whole winter!

Amy's. They make thingsfrom Thai coconut to mushroom soup. It's mostly organic without high sodium.
  • Some of the Health Valley soups are low in sodium and vegetarian. Also Trader Joe's has a couple of bean based vegetarian soups that are low in sodium.

Amy's brand is great and they also have a low-sodium line. Also, McDougall's and Imagine organic soups have a lot of low-sodium vegetarian options.

make you own and make them in bulk then freeze in portions that way you warm up just what you need for a meal
no salt needs to be added at all

Most store-bought soups are going to be pretty high in sodium.

I really like Pacific Natural soups (especially the creamy tomato, which is vegetarian but not vegan). I've seen it in Walmart, but the Earth Fare here carries the low-sodium version. It may be tough to find, but check their website and see if you can do a search and find out if it's sold in your area.

Health Valley, Amy's, Happy Planet are all great choices.
I know many have said it already, but make your own and if you can't eat it all at once and freeze individual portions that can be defrosted and heated up when you want one.

Select Harvest has delicious vegetarian brands! There all mostly light versions too. I am a huge fan of Pacific Foods organic roasted red pepper soup and there are varieties. so delicious!

McDougal's! Both boxed (small boxes) and dried soups.

They make low sodium varieties, really really good stuff.

Anything canned is going to have high sodium I think.
I'd say invest in a crock pot/slow cooker and make your own. You can easily freeze and then thaw them :)
and then YOU control the sodium/calories!

I'll jump into the 'make your own' chorus! You won't believe how easy it is to do, until you actually make one. I make a big batch and then take a thermos to work for the rest of the week. My husband (a meat eater) now requests parsnip, squash, tomato, and potato soups because they are so tasty!

My latest fav is Veganomicon's Baked Potato and Greens soup:
