13.1 Challenge

Hi, My name is Bernie and I was a long time runner many years ago. Many years and many reasons have passed and I want to get back into the swing of it again. I am excited about the challenge of running my first 1/2 marathon. I am totally out of shape and am shooting for the San Diego Rock and Roll 1/2 marathon. I am challenging myself and anyone else remotely interested to do it.
My kids online school and teachers are doing it now, but I am too out of shape to make it in January. I started walking Monday and intend to increase my daily miles as much as possible and train for June 3, 2012.
Starting today in Month of November, I would like to walk at least 3 miles a day and continue to increase endurance.
Be back later with progress.
I NEED BUDDIES! Can't do this alone.

I am wanting to do the 1/2 marathon for the Leukemia and Lymphoma society next summer. Right now I can walk the average 3 miles an hour, though not sure how to work my way up to a faster pace.0

Fantastic goal. Signing up for a race can really help to motivate you when you don't feel like running.
Are you familiar with the Couch to 5K (C25K) Program? It's a great program that helps you ramp up your running at your own pace, helping to avoid fatigue or injury. A support group has been been created to share info, stories and successes: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/groups/home/30-couch-to-5k-running-program-c25k It's a public group -- no invite necessary.
A couple of sites that outline the C25K program:

I am aiming to do either a half or full next spring. I just started doing a marathon training program and if that goes well I will attempt the Rock n roll DC next march. If I decide the training is too much and I can't handle the mileage (yet) I will go for the half instead.0

I hear ya. Marathon is just to far for me yet, and the PHX one is the race for my kids online school. They have formed a team to do the 1/2 in Jan. I am just not ready, that is only 8 weeks away. So, I looked up on the Rock and Roll site and picked San Diego for next June. We live in PHX so it is not too far to drive.
Running is awesome! I started very young, but quit after getting married and having our two boys. There are lots of training sites out there to help you learn to run in a safe way. You can do it!!!!

This is a very good pace for walking. Seriously, even 3.5 to 4 for me is really moving it and I might as well be running. Maybe you could give it a slow jog for one minute every five minutes you are walking. Many training programs suggest this. You can do that 1/2 marathon. No problem. I will cheer you on.

This is EXCELLENT advice! I have heard of the C25K before. I hope all who read this post see yours. I will check it out. I was not sure if they had one here on the fitness pal site. Thank you for the suggestion very much.0 -

Totally great! You have put alot of thought into your training already. I looked at the March race too, but decided to stay closer to home and give myself more time. I might be ready sooner. We will see. The farthest race I have been in was a 6 miler. I know I can do that, but I want more! What an accomplishment, this is personal. LOL0 -

I'm looking to do the Rock n Roll DC also but only the half. I'm not ready for the full. I'm willing to take up the challenge, I plan to start training next month.0 -
I'm on board with you. My goals for the next year are to run a 5k or better race each and every month, with a 10k by summer, and the St Jude half Marathon by next December.
I've only recently gotten back into running after a five year hiatus and have been running 5-6 days a week for the last month and a half. Five or so years ago, I could literally run forever at a decent 8mph pace. A month ago, I could barely knock out 2.5 miles at a 5mph pace. Today I'm doing 4.5-5 miles a day at 6mph so it is coming back to me quickly...0 -

Same here, except I will be doing the one in San Diego. We can so do this. I am training now, which consists of walking most of the miles and running little spurts.
Good Luck!0 -

That is wonderful! I cannot wait until I get there again. I use to run forever too and 6 mile races in about 50 minutes all the time. Not sure I will get back to that, but I will get as close as possible and enjoy a healthy rest of my life is the plan. Keep it up!
