dumb question but seriously want to know...

So, I've been sick for like 3 weeks. I have a hard time keeping things down. I get into these caughing fits and end up making myself sick. Like I said I know its a dumb question but most of the time its right after I eat so I don't have time to digest anything. Then because I just got sick I don't feel like eating. Should I still log those cals?

If you don't feel like you're digesting what you've eaten, then I don't think it's worth logging. Of course, I'm not a doctor.

Well if this has been occuring for this long. . I hope that you've seen a physician for it. . That is the best advice you can get! Hope you feel better real soon!
  • I'd see a doctor. Dont worry about logging and make sure you get yourself back to good health!! :))

If you are not keeping the food down very long you're not absorbing the cals.
Might think about a Dr. if this goes on

This, I would advise putting the diet on the back burner for now, just eat what you can and get better.
  • That is actually a good qustion. I don't know for sure but I wouldn't log them. People with eating disorders become very ill doing that on purpose and they are very nutrient deprived. I would say if you get sick right after you eat, nothing has a chance to be digested therefor no nutrients, including calories, have a chance to enter your blood stream.

I agree.Since most of your calories and nutrients are absorbed in the small intestine, you probably aren't getting the nutrition you need. Feel better soon.

Pay close attention to what your eating. I used to have this problem all the time when I'd be sick then eat soup, crackers, or toast, I was unintentionally eating something I had a severe reaction to, wheat. I'd see a doc and get tested.

Its hard to say how much you are absorbing and how much you are vomiting.

My daughters just got over a flu bug. Even though they hardly ate they were still able to vomit food most of the day. It may seem like you are losing your lunch but its probably a small portion plus other food thats been in there awhile, fluids and acid. Its better to just eat what you can, log it and be done.

And go to a doctor because unless you are pregnant, you shouldn't be throwing up for three weeks I would imagine.

I have seen a doctor. Im on antibiotics and i had to get a chest xray. I go back next week to go over the results. I haven't been eating the healthiest but still trying to stay within my cals for the day.
  • Uh, yeah.

You know why most bulimics are at a normal-high weight? Because the majority of calories are absorbed in your mouth. Even if you puke them back up, you've already taken them in.

Its true that bulimics are often normal weight, but I'm not sure if its for the reasons you have stated. There are some people who throw up food due to illness and they lose a drastic amount of weight - if that was true they wouldn't lose so much weight as they do. There could be a variety of reasons why bulimics are not thin, it could be disordered eating and binge eating. But again, I'm not a doctor either.

Edited because I don't want people to get funny ideas : /

But anyway, I really hope you see a Dr. about this issue, it sounds like something's really not right.
  • OK on topic here. Put the diet aside. Talk to your doctor about some healthy choices you can make. The antibotics may be effecting your diet. Make sure you know what the side effects are. Really your focus should be on your health not on how many calories you are intaking.

I'm having stomach issues too -- I frequently get sick after eating, but still log my foods. Also, I've been going to a doctor and getting tests dones for about a month. You need to talk to someone ...it's not normal.

If you are sick I would give logging a miss for a while. I am pretty sure that this site was not set up to cope with vomiting bugs! Recover fully from your sicky bug and then see how you feel.

    LOL.

But in all seriousness, calories and a diet are the last thing you should be worried about. Focus on getting yourself healthy, and I definitely agree that you should get to your doctor as soon as possible. If you try to overwork yourself, or put your focus on something other than getting well, you're only going to make it worse.

Good luck, and I hope you feel better quickly! :)

I'm on board with the "go see a doctor"! You may have some sort of infection that could be cured with simple antibiotics...or you may have a food allergy. I'd be more concerned with this issue than logging calories, to be honest! Good luck!

Suggesting that someone should log their sicked-up calories is not a very funny joke, if you really were joking.

To the OP, yes I would log it. Why? Because you do not know how much is coming back up and how much was digested. When I am sick, I try drinking my calories. I like to bulk up on Gatorade and broth till the illness is gone. I always log anything I drink.

    Good luck and feel better.

If she's really concerned about her diet while sick, then she might as well log them. Better to be honest with yourself. Though I really don't think it's something she should be worrying about.

Have you been to see a doctor? Those are symptoms of walking pnemonia.

Well, OP, you can go with this person who says log what you sicked up since calories are absorbed in the mouth (but might be joking) or most people who say you are sick and to hell with the xyz diet until you are better.

Whichever you go with, get well soon.

I would say focus on getting better and not worrying about the diet at this moment.

Calories are not absorbed in the mouth, they are absorbed in intestines. The mouth and stomach are for digestion purposes. The mouth grinds up the food, starts the digestion process, and then the stomach finishes the digestion so the small intestines can get the nurtients out of the food that it needs. Most absorption happens in the small intestines. The large intestine is for water absorption.

Take what you want out of that. I am in nursing school so I am not a professional (yet) but I have taken multiple classes on nutrition and physiology.

edit - I forgot the part I was going to say about if it isn't absorbed, it doesn't count.
