Runner's Knee

It hurts! And I'm seriously aggravated that I can't do much more than walk along and limp instead of going on my normal runs. Has anyone else experienced this and--if so--how did they overcome it? I'm resting my leg as much as I can but as a study abroad student there's only so much resting I can do before I have to do stuff, you know, abroad.

Resting, icing, heating, Omega 3 vitamins, aleve, stretches--all of those I'm doing but can anyone suggest anything more that might help?

Please?

I got a brace for mine to wear during runs, just one of those fabric sleeves you can slip on that helps hold everything in place. It really helped during the run, and then of course icing it afterwards.

Ugh, I am just finally recovering from runner's knee that put me on crutches in May. Unfortunately, there wasn't much I could do except ice it, take ibuprofin and stop running for a few months. The orthopedic dr said he didn't want me to run for awhile. But I am signed up for my first 5K since May and am running for fun, not to win or anything, as super training would most likely re-injure it. I started with slower walks and worked my way back to jogging but it just takes patience. No fun, sorry.

I suffered with it in September. Unfortunately, the only thing that made it better was time.

RICE will help the symptoms then go to a doctor to solve the medical issue.

Some folks, like Jessy, have to stop running completely. I just had knee pain for 35 years! It really depends on the cause.

Check out runnersworld.com — runners knee is one of the more common running issues.

"Omega 3 vitamins" - may be helpful for some things but nothing to do with a bum knee. :-)

I've had "runner's knee" (chrondromalacia patellae) for a long time. It started in 1977 and I had symptoms until 2005. I started taking glucosamine and the pain went away. Now that I've lost a lot of weight, I think it's been resolved so, when my schedule permits, I'm going to try not taking the glucosamine and see what happens (it's quite possible that the relief I got from glucosamine could have been the placebo effect).

I swear REST is the worst four letter word to a runner/active person, but it is best. A pain killer that reduces swelling like Motrin is best if you can take it without adverse medical interaction with other drugs. And doing the least amount of "stuff" for two weeks, then ease into it, with your knee inmind, not your weight or exercise and if you feel pain at all stop. You have only your right knee and your left knee to get you around for the rest of your life. :) It sucks. I hope you get through it quickly. I hurt my hip the first week of c25k and stopped for two weeks. It still feels different, but no pain. Good Luck!

Right there with you. I ran my last "real" run the beginning of October. I give it a few weeks, try a short run, and almost have to crawl home. I am going to give it another month, and if it is still bothering me, I am going to see someone. I guess it's better to be safe than sorry - I sure don't want to cause more serious or even permanent damage. Good luck, and I hope you find some answers.

Unfortunately there is no way to rush the healing process. I went through it and it took 6 weekst o run again.

Yep, Sorry, leCitron, but RICE and time are usually the great healers. From what I understand runner's knee often stems from a biomechanical instability of some kind. Find yourself a doctor who runs or treats runners, and have your gait checked once you feel a little better. In my case, I suffered with PT for a long time, until my doc got me into a good set of orthotics that corrected my flat feet and resulting overpronation.

    I haven't had PT since.

P90X is what solved it for me. Muscle imbalances from only running. I still struggle with it but it's getting better. Mine probably stems from over pronation issues as like jskaggs stated. However, I'd just rather train differently than wear orthotics, just my own choice.
