What's the deal with water?

I don't understand the requirement of drinking water. Can someone please fill me in?

(and before I'm just brushed off as a loony, my apologies for posting about something to controversial yesterday. I honestly had no idea about how bad a low calorie diet could be on the body. I simply researched a bit about it from what i thought were reputable sources and was questioning it. I, by ~no~ means, was trying to 'thumbs up' it as a way to go. So I asked. And you all told me. I hope that can just be behind me now. I'm not a crazy quick-fixer. I really want to lose my weight (and keep it off) for good. My "mental note" post was meant as a public acknowlegement of my error, but that even went downhill. So please, let's let it go with the recognition I learned my lesson.)

Anywho ..... water.

I'm sure it'sw been talked about and over talked about, but what is the water really needed for? And then the followup question - why don't diet drinks count AS water if they are made 97% of water. Can anyone chime in on the science behind it?
