I've done a bit of research on this and my RDA for sodium is 1.5 grams (1500 milligrams??). MFP gives me a daily sodium goal of 2500 (i assume this is milligrams) - is this not far too much?

  • im not sure if its correct but i know for me i try really hard to watch my sodium intake and keep it as less as i can to much sodium/ (salt) turns to water gain at least it does for me anyhow try cutting that back and see how it works for you i do know that to much of it is not good for the body and will make u bloated and will turn to water gain

It depends on your goal- a 2,500 goal is on the more generous side. I reset my personal journal to reflect to more than 2,000 in a day. Ideally, your calorie intake and sodium should be as close to a 1:1 ratio as possible for optimum health.

It is. I've no idea why, but EVERYONE's MFP allowance is 2500, regardless of what you set your caloric intake at. Luckily, you can just change it yourself if you want to watch your sodium. Tracking mine has been possibly the hardest part of this whole dietary transformation for me. I wish you the best of luck!

My sodium goal is 1500. I am salt sensitive and 1500 controls my blood pressure. I changed my MFP goals to reflect that.

I believe that is the new recommendation is 1500 for everyone. Boy are people in for a rude awakening trying to meet that goal especially if they eat out a lot.

For weight loss purposes, I have found I am most successful in a week where I have attained the 1500 for sodium and between 2000 and 3000 for potassium. I do count calories as that is the main function of the food entries, but it is my control of sodium and potassium that I watch and monitor most for both health and weight loss.

Healthy people can consume 2300mg sodium daily
2010 diet guidelines now recommends a decrease in sodium to 1500 mg daily for individuals with hypertension, blacks, and middle-aged and older adults
I suppose MFP assumes everyone is healthy. You can modify your sodium goal if you need to.
