Most accurate way to track calories burned?

The display on my elliptical burned out, so I have no real way to track my calories burned while working out on it (not that I thought it was all that accurate in the first place). Is a heart rate monitor the best way to see how many calories burned while excersizing?

I love my HRM because I can use it other forms of exercise, like yard work, or heavy duty spring cleaning, and just plain aerobics classes without equipment. It's great!

Definitely a Heart Rate Monitor. I got a Polar F6 and I cannot workout without it. I've noticed on some machines, the heart rate is way WAY off base, other machines its close or exact match to what my own HRM states, so its nearly impossible to know.
Also the calorie count on MFP is also way way off base...( sorry MFP)

I think you can get a Polar HRM for about $90 or so. I know there is an F4, I dont know the features of each, but in my own opinion, the f6 is worth MY weight in gold. I absolutely LOVE it.

I was just abt to ask if the calories burned on my treadmill were correct or not. When I enter them on MFP it shows almost 100 calories less then my treadmill.
