I don't have a very green thumb but I'm not bad at growing cherry tomatoes. I've got 7 plants this year. I've also got capsicums, parsley & mint growing. My beans have been eaten before they've even grown anything on them This year I've planted lettuce & pak choi & it hasn't worked out too well with 1 lettuce & 2 pak choi that have survived!!
I'm learning & in the meantime a cheap fruit & vege shop has just opened round the corner from my house, I don't know what hours they're open, they seem to always be open. So handy when I'm cooking tea & need to shoot round there & grab something!0 -
Oh my, your garden sounds lovely!
This year I had 16 tomato plants of different varieties (the golden boys & golden cherries produced the most), red onion, Spanish onion, carrots, radishes, cauliflower, broccoli, Sweet red, green, yellow & PURPLE peppers, Swiss chard, red lettuce, green lettuce, spinach, pole beans, snow peas, snap peas, cucumber, butternut squash, spaghetti squash, zucchini, herbs, and I just put my garlic in to over winter last month.
I know that next year I will definitely NOT be doing the spaghetti squash or the cauliflower. I had an awful time with powdery mildew this year & it spread to all of the other squash in the garden. And cauliflower although delicious, just takes up too much room for that one harvest. It's alright though, both give small yields & take up far too much precious real estate, so next season kohl rabi & kale will be moving in to those empty plots of earth.
It's so nice to see another fellow vegetable gardener & from NZ too! As a Canadian, I must admit I am ever-so-envious of your ability to plant fruit-bearing trees. I am curious about your climate however. Do you grow all year round? Can cold tolerant plants make it through the rainy season? Or is it just too darned wet?0 -
forgot about the 6 lettuce that i can just rip off and let it keep growing tis great. have seen from others there are veges i can also grow..
i put in many and different vareities of tomatos as they all have a purpose.. i am going to try nana cucumber and tomato relish.. also i make soup two years ago when i did it i got 12 litres of tomato soup...so is good. i also grow lots so that i can freeze for the winter so i can still have capsicums at a good price..:)0 -
we have winter and summer veges where i live it gets wet autum and end of winter when climate is going from wet one day hot the next not very good things like cauli cabbage tend to shoot quiet quickly.. i would love to get a glass house. just a small one so i can grow stuff in the winter also...becomes expensive. if i can grow stuff i in winter i would be happy it is spring here and it is wet and windy and only had a couple of days of son.. I am in Palmerston north if you want to look on a map.. also i know i have friends in te awamutu which is between new plymouth and hamilton and they are already trucking water on to there farm...so we have a diverse weather system here in new zealand..my area is manawatu and that is the worse place for allergies in new zealand..0
