Food allergies anyone?

Hi! I'm new here. I'm currently still breastfeeding my 19month old who has life threatening food allergies. I have to avoid his allergens, which are; all dairy, tree nuts, peanuts, eggs and to a lesser degree apples.
Is anyone else with special dietary requirements also trying to loose weight?
It just feels doubly hard. I finally feel like I have a grip on meals that we can eat, so now I feel like I can finally start my weight loss journey. So far, all I can think of is to eat less and cut out all junk. Eating less might be hard! I cut out pop, so that is probably a good start!
Any advice is appreciated!

I have food allergies as well.
My biggest one is corn. It's in breads, crackers, yogurt, granola bars, etc, in so many different forms. While I don't have a severe reaction to it, if I eat too many products with corn in it at a time or over the course of a few days I get severely itchy.
It was tough to find a bread that didn't have some form of corn in it, and then they stopped selling it! I'm going to the grocery store again today to read labels. Same for crackers.
I'm also allergic to peanuts, walnuts, pecans, pork, beef (is very iffy...sometimes I can get away with a small serving).
It's a pain reading labels but you do what you've gotta do!
All the best!0 -

I don't have an food allergies, but I have a mild intolerance to citric acid. I can eat a little but too much and I'm up all night with an upset stomach. citric acid is in a lot of diet foods and I can't eat lemons, oranges or drink orange juice or other citrus things.0

I recently took a food allergy test and like I thought all of my life, I am seriously allergic to alot of foods.
Though this test revealed alot I feel like there are some foods that make me feel sick after I eat them, and some of them just make me feel tired. (which to me is more like a intolorence to a food).
But here is my list of Severe Allergies: Shellfish, Seasame.
Here are some of that just cause me to feel UGH!!: Milk, Cheese, Beef, Pinapples, OJ. Most Acidic Foods.
The test revealed that I am allergic to pet dander, and cockroaches! But my doctor said she see's that alot on the test with her patients.
But people have so many food allergies and dont know and I believe it hinders weight loss as well.
I am very careful now In the things I do eat....Dairy is biggest problem though, because its in everything.0 -
i'm allergic to something. i have no idea what it is, but sometimes during a meal, my neck gets red, and my ear lobes swell up. i honestly have no idea what it is, and i've seen an allergist.0

Lactose intolerance as well as onion and garlic intolerance. Allergic to artificial Raspberry and bell peppers...
My nutrition teacher says that if you feed a baby younger than 6 months solid foods (even liquified solids like baby food) that child has a higher risk of having food allergies... Just another great reason to breastfeed until age 6 months...0 -
I would advise trying to eat lots of soups, especially vegetable based ones. Those will help you feel full and hopefully won't have any of those allergens. You could make your own, or maybe buy ones like Progresso that has a line of low cal soups.0

This happens to my mom when she eats anything with msg in it. But the swelling doesn't stop at her ear lobes.. her hands swell, feet, legs, everything.0 -
I am severely allergic to dairy and have been for the last 20 years of my life. I am not having any difficulty as I substitute non-dairy products for dairy versions. Its not easy as label reading is required and eating out is limited.0

Thanks! I think that's exactly what I will do!
I mostly cook from scratch since avoiding my sons allergens. He reacts even to trace amounts of his allergens, so I have learned to cook and bake from scratch! I don't have anything containing his allergens in the house at all, so I never have to worry.
I'm one day down! Hopefully today will be another good day!0 -
Hi, allergies and food intolerances are full on at the best of times but when it is your little one it feels ten times worse, especially when you are the one in charge of their diet. My 19month old is allergic to peanut, dairy, egg, banana, dustmite, cats, garden mould and horses. Praise the Lord his allergies aren't severe enough for an epipen but he can get covered in hives and really bad eczema - he is also asthmatic. My older son (5) and I recently got allergy tested aswell our results were negative for allergy but our food journals suggested to the dietitian/allergy person that we probably have food intolerances and so we are on elimination diets to try and discover what our problem foods are and it is HARD coz some reactions can take 2-3 days to surface and can take 2-3days (or longer) to settle.
the elimination diet you need to be supervised by a dietitian to do but two books that have saved my sanity and given my great strength and hope are:
"Friendly Food; The essential guide to avoiding allergies, additives and problem chemicals" This book is put out by the allergy experts at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital Allergy Unit and explains allergies v food intolerances has amazing hints and methods for living with both and a great range of recipes absolute gold.
"The Failsafe Cookbook; reducing food chemicals for calm, happy families" by Sue Dengate
includes her and her families experiences through their journey with food intolerances, has great suggestions and again a great range of recipes to help you out - it also has a section in the back of symptoms that could be from food intolerance and the likely culprits.
hang in there and remember even when it feels completely crap and amazing overwhelming, you are doing what you need to for your little one.
reading labels is tough, frustrating and depressing most of my shopping trips have me in tears but bit by bit you start to work it out and you get days of great triumph,
also make sure each day you make time to pause and watch bubby sleeping somehow it just helps.
good luck, and remember bit by bit (sometimes second by second)
you can do it0 -
I feel your pain. I have a very rare food allergy, I've only met one other person who had it. I'm allergic to citrus fruits. So I can't eat anything with raw or fresh oranges, lemons, limes, pineapples, etc.0

You should talk to your doctor and your child's doctor for an eating plan to make sure that you are getting proper nutrition for breast feeding while trying to lose weight. This is especially true when dealing with food allergies as that can include problems with nutrient absorption.0
