Body Pump Questions?

So today I was supposed to start body pump, however, the receptionist forgot to tell me I was supposed to attend a clinic beforehand in order to get assesed, go over the basics etc. I turned up today without doing any of that and the woman said it was too late for her to show me. Instead she offered me a half hour 1-1 on Thursday before the class starts to go over it all, so it seems like day 1 will be Thursday.

(I didn't just go home btw, I done brief 15ish minutes on the bike and around half an hour doing weight in the gym - not the same, but it's a start on the strength!).

Now, my plan is to eventually do 2 - 3 body pump classes per week, with some extra cardio (running or swimming)/30ds levels thrown into the mix in no set pattern to keep my body guessing. I'm also going to do 20 minutes of pilate daily for added tone.

To all those who body pump a few questions if you please?
1. How often do you body pump?
2. What other exercise do you do?
3. How long did it take for you to see definiton/tone in your body?

Also, most people on here have a HRM it seems for body pump, but until mid-december with birthdays/nursery fees/getting christmas shopping out the way I literally ONLY have money to live off of and no more - so no HRM until then for me.
Reading through other posts it seems like most people, on average, burn at least 300kcal in a 60 minute session (which the ones I want to attend are and I can do the math to work out kcal per min and adjust to other time intervals), with many burning more.
Would you believe it to be okay to just make my own body pump exercise and enter a value of 300kcal for a 60 minute session? This would be until I get my HRM and can adjust it properly, and is purely based on the averages I've seen around the boards. Plus I never eat back all my excercise calories, so it would be pretty safe if I over-estimate by a touch.

Thank you!

I wouldn't do it more than 3-4, because it's full body. I'd just add cardio on the other days, or you could do some the same day. The time it takes to see definition depends on how much fat you have still. Also, I HRM it and got 350. I weighed 110 at that time

    1. I Pump 2 times a week usually, occasionally I can sneak in a 3rd but that's more because of my kid's schedule, if I had the time I would definitely take it 3 times every week.
    2. I also take Step and Sculpt, spinning, yoga, sometimes TurboKick, I run and I do the weight machines on my own on days that I haven't pumped.
    3. I started seeing changes after about 4 months, I've been pumping for a year now. I am also overweight (getting better, lol) so some of the definition I have couldn't really show through until the fat was gone.

To answer your other question, I created my own line in the Exercise/Cardio section. My instructor told us she was told we burn an average of 500 calories/hour so that's what I use. I don't eat all my exercise calories back in case that is high though. Les Mils actually says burn an average of 560 but again, I wasn't sure and didn't want to grossly overestimate.

Good Luck!! I LOVE Body Pump and am completely hooked on it.

I used to do it, it's a great class and you will definitely see improvements is you do it consistently.

I wouldn't do it more than 3 times a week, you may only want to do 2 per week, see how you feel. You're going to be really sore the first couple of times because you're using every part of your body, so you'll want to have a rest day in between each session.

I used to log it as circuit training.

    Good Luck!

I didnt have to do that at my gym...I think I would have been irritated. I like to start when I have the motivation goin'. BUT maybe that one on one will help because I was so sore for four days after my first class that I didnt go back for nine months. Just started back...with small weight so I can keep moving!! Sooo, 3 a week to allow time for healing. And jogging or cycling for me other days...for 30 to 45 mins. I dont know where you are at as far as weight training but truly consider low weight your first class or two. You wont regret it.

Thanks for the calorie count because I hadnt looked it up yet.
  • I am a super skeptic when it comes to calorie burning estimates on anything.. and I really doubt that the average person burns 500 calories doing Pump. I just say this because you use large muscle groups only part of the 60 minutes and your heart rate reaches the 'cardio' zone for only part of the time as well. The rest is essentially just weight training, which by nature does not burn nearly as many calories than cardio exercise.

The same goes for the machines, such as the eliptical. The most conservative one that I have used gives about a 300 calorie read-out after 30 minutes, (which I still think is a bit of an overestimate) - but if this is correct I can say that I exert myself 3x as much on that machine than I do during Pump.

Also guys, estimates are based on 'perfect pumping' - and I'm sure no one has the best form on all the exercises.
