Mud Running

I've really got no interest in running a traditional 5k once, let alone on a regular basis. I know that some out there do this and love it...more power to you guys!
Recently I've been looking at getting into doing some mud-runs/ dirty-dashes/obstacle-5ks. These look like a lot of fun and would give me some type of competition to train for and look forward to.
I'm looking for some people that have done these and I have some questions for you guys. Where do you find the events? I live in North Carolina and would be willing to travel almost anywhere in the state. Is there a good site that keeps up with them and advertises them in NC? How do you train? How often do you run them? How much more difficult than running the three miles is it? How long should I plan before my first one? Any other advice or comments would be appreciated!

Try active.com I did 2 mud runs this year and LOVED them!!!!!! Cost about the same as a regular 5K but oh my gosh so much fun!!!
I basically ran but did strength training and cross training in between. I have weak upper body so I lifted weights, certainly helped. I've ran since I started doing triathlons back in '07 so I knew the distance I'd be ok with, it was lifting myself up and over I was worried about. Gave myself a good 6 weeks of weights, but it depends on your personal abilities of course.
Could also goggle couch to 5K, I'm pretty sure that's a free plan.
Good luck to you You'll have a blast!0 -
Good for you! Check out the groups... there are a few just for those types of races. I aspire to do a Tough Mudder someday.0

Warrior Dash and Rugged Maniac are great. Never did the Metro Dash though...doesn't appeal to me like the others.0
