620 calories left at 8 pm!

Ok so it's 7:40 here in Kentucky. I'm trying to make it a point to not eat after 8ish. But I still have 620 calories left for the day, and I'm really not hungry. Is it healthy to have this many calories left?

Does late night eating give you discomfort?

That's a pretty big gap. But if this is just some one time thing, no need to sweat it. If it's a regular thing, you should work on bridging the gap.

What happens after 8pm that you decided not to eat after that time?
  • Well Ive always been told it's not healthy to eat late because your body doesn't digest it very good. But this is a bad habit for me too. I'm trying to get out of the habit of only eating 2 times a day

Sounds like you've got a head start on Thanksgiving supper.

A couple spoonfuls of peanut butter will take care of many of those calories without filling you up.

This is the time for calorie dense healthy options if you really feel the need to eat. Nuts, nut butters, avocado, skip the low/no fat items from your menu for full-fat versions, like whole milk instead of skim, full-fat regular mayo/miracle whip instead of the reduced fat...

peanut butter is yummy. a couple spoonfuls full will be about 200 cals...so while it will help to bridge the gap, you may want to add a glass of milk (if you do dairy) or almond/soy milk if not, and put the peanut butter on some whole grain bread...?
  • Drink some milk! Its good for you and can quickly eat up some calories.
  • Nope, no thanksgiving food yet lol. Im not sure why, I just haven't really been all that hungry today. I'm sure I'll have no problem with meeting my calories tomorrow lol. But I really am going to try to not go over :)

    I understand.

You should eat according to personal preference when you look at meal timing and/or frequency. If it makes you uncomfortable or you have problems with indigestion/etc then obviously avoid night eating. But, the rule about not eating late is myth, and it won't effect fat gain provided you are still hitting your calorie targets by end of day.

Are you comfortable eating twice per day?

I just want you to know that I'm asking these questions because it's common for people to make dietary changes based on things that don't matter. If you LIKE eating twice per day and you can hit your calorie targets doing so, then you're fine doing that, medical conditions aside.
  • Well usually I eat twice a day because I skip breakfast and usually lunch (working really early in the
Morning really throws of my eating habits.

Okay. The point I was just trying to get at is that you should aim to hit your calorie and macronutrient targets by the end of the day. I wouldn't worry about how many times you eat or how late you eat, provided you hit these targets. You could eat it all before bed or you could take one bite of food every 2.5 minutes, or perhaps something in between these two scenarios.

    Whatever fits your lifestyle.
  • Thanks :)

I eat twice a day and just had a 1400 calorie dinner.

Doesn't hinder weight loss/management at all.

I skip breakfast, have around 2-300 cal lunch, then the rest of my calories are after 10pm usually...

Eating two times a day isn`t good. Your metabolism will slow down. You are better off eating little meals but more often because it keeps you burning calories and your body won`t go into starvation mode. Unless you have problems digesting after 8pm, eating at night shouldn`t be an issue, it is a myth (unless you are gorging yourself on tons of crap at night that might give you a tummy ache). As long as you remain within your calorie goal for the day, your deficit at the end of the week will add up.

I usually have a 200 calorie breakfast, a 100 calorie 10 a.m snack, 300 lunch, 35 calorie yogurt for a 3pm snack and then a 400 calorie dinner, which leaves me a 165 calories for an evening snack. If I exercise, I usually gain between 215-500 calories.... I either eat half or all of them depending on the day. So far doing this, I have managed to lose 49 lbs. I am also not hungry all day because I supply my body with the energy it needs.

    Good luck !

Actually, the above is also a myth. Thermic effect of food is based on macronutrient composition and calories ingested. Frequency is not a part of the process. If you would information on this please let me know.

    Congrats! That's a great accomplishment!
