I went to our community rec center today to have my body composition tested. I'm close to my desired weight, but wanted to be sure my body fat % was following. I was pleasantly surprised! He did 3 tests for me. First, a standard bioelectrical impedance test, then an athletic bioelectrical impedance test, and finally a good ol' skinfold test. All 3 came back with different numbers, but the skinfold is supposed to be the most accurate, and it came in between the other 2 numbers, so I am using that number as my result... 19.55% Considering that 14-20% is considered athletic, I'm excited and proud to say I fall in that category. Thanks to MFP for helping me get here!

Good job! Fyi the underwater weighing tank is the most accurate but not everyone has access to those, you might even find that it is better than the skin fold because not everyone pinches the same! CONGRATS!

Actually, theres one even better then the hydrostatic test (the dunk tank).

called DEXA, but not many places have it. So yeah, for all intents and purposes, hydrostatic is the most accurate, about 2 percent margin for error (DEXA has essentially 0 margin for error, it's very small, but it's expensive if you can find it, about 300 bucks per test).

There's a new one that just came out recently called the Bod Pod, relatively cheap and showing up all over the place, about the same cost and error rate as hydrostatic testing.

Unfortunately, being in the middle-of-nowhere-South-Dakota, I don't have access to either of those more accurate options. I'll take what I can get.... but good info for others

Good for you!! It's nice that he used multiple modes to come up with a measurement. I was measured by a chick about my age who didn't know how to properly administer a skinfold, and she put me at 28.6%. I said, 'Gosh, that's pretty high considering my muscle definition." And she said, 'Well, I've been doing this for a while, so I'd like to think I'm right.' And I though...'Well I've been doing this for only 4 years, and you look like you might be younger than I am, so I don't know how much longer YOU could've been doing it!" :grumble:

One of my DD's had a similar situation. It was part of a class with students doing testing. She was told she was obese. She is 5"1' and maybe 105 lbs soaking wet. She talked to the instuctor so they would look closer at how they were testing.

Wow, yea, when you're training you need to be very clear that your results aren't legitimate at all. If anyone in our classes wanted an actual test, the prof did it because he's got 20+ years of experience. It takes a loooooot of practice to get the correct position, angle, and pressure for a skinfold. The girl who tested me did okay with positioning at the correct site, but didn't allow the calipers to settle, so my BF was way overestimated. I should've pointed that out.
