Just wanted to say hello and see if anyone's in the same kind of boat as me? I'm 40ish and need to get more flexible and a bit stronger and do some cv. I have a permanent health condition which isn't a massive deal but means I can't do really intensive exercise, but I really haven't done enough of *any* exercise. I want to start but I might need a bit of prodding from helpful people!

It would be great to find people with the same sort of goals. Is anyone out there? :)

    HI there !

Since you have a health condition that prevents you from exercise, perhaps you should try walking or swimming, Or talk perhaps to a professional (perhaps a trainer) who can work around your health condition and find the appropriate exercises for you do achieve your goals. Good luck :)

    Yes! I'm here!!

I'm 53, have lost all my weight, and am now completing 5K runs having started the C5K program a couple months ago. And that after no being able to tie my shoes without being out of breath in May.

I think a good way to begin, is to start with light cardio. For example: low intensity level on a treadmill, stationary bike, or elliptical.

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions, and well done Russell, that's so inspiring! Light cardio sounds good - I can (or could last time) manage half an hour of cycling and walking (alternate ten mins) but had not considered swimming, that might be a really good idea. Couldn't do basketball or anything like that, but I can do those. I'd love to do a 5k but not sure if I can get to that, as apparently my muscles don't recover as fast as usual. How do you all manage to keep motivated after the first enthusiasm wears off?

Oh and good idea about the trainer, I'll see if they can do that at the gym.
  • Hi CD,
Welcome and good luck in reaching your goals. I am also in my 40's and am working around some medical conditions that prevent any high impact exercise. I've had good luck with yoga for flexibility and strength. Plus it makes me feel good. Maybe get a DVD and see if it is something that will work for you? Finding a good instructor can also be a huge plus.
    Best of luck!

Thanks Kira, that's a good idea too. I think I even have one somewhere. Good to hear from you
