I am going to start this in a week or so and am wondering something,,,,

Does everyone start at week 1 or can you start on a different week if you can already run/jog a bit? I can jog about 12 minutes straight but would not call myself anything near a runner, so wondered which week I should start at?

I would try Week 3, and see how you feel from there.

If you're interested, there is a public C25K support group, no invite needed to join. http://www.myfitnesspal.com/groups/home/30-couch-to-5k-running-program-c25k

I could probably do a 12 min run straight up too, but I started off on week one just make sure because it's quite different - lots of chopping and changing for a whole 30 mins. I would recommend starting at the beginning to see how you feel and then you can always skip or repeat, I'm on week 3 but have repeated quite a lot just to make sure. Good luck! I'm really enjoying it

If you can already jog 12 minutes straight you'll do great! I've graduated now but when I started doing 8 1-minute runs was hard work... I suggest (like ElExGordo) you start at week 3, cos if you go from the beginning and do every session you might get bored. Enjoy!

Emma, I have been following your progress and I want to say congratulations! I know how liberating it can be to finally run without out pain!

How often do you run 12 minutes straight? I know you've been through the ringer with pain and such and seeing a physio. One of the most common mistakes of a new runner is doing too much too soon. It would be an absolute shame for you to over do it too soon unnecessarily. Building a base slowly is your greatest asset in running. You are strengthening your bones and muscles each time you go out. It is very important not to rush especially if you have a history of injury. I speak from experience. I believe I rushed C25K and ended up with IT band issues that took months to resolve.

I'm not at all trying to discourage you from starting at week three if that is the right week for you to start at, I just wanted to present a case for not rushing. If you don't have any reason to rush, (a race or something) why risk it?

Karin makes a great case, especially if you're overcoming an injury.

Thanks for the great advice. I have only run twice recently in my daughter's shoes. Thursday I did ten mins then another five mins. Friday I did 12 mins then 4 then another 4. My calves are sore but I am thinking that is Ok. Certainly better than knees!
